Abstract

Disclosed herein are antifungal compositions for treatment of skin and nails, as well as methods of making and using the same.

         29 . A topical composition for treating a skin disease caused by or relating to microbial colonization and/or infection, the composition comprising:
 (a) 0.01% to 10% (w/w) povidone-iodine (PVP-I); and   (b) greater han 30% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO),   
       wherein the skin disease is selected from the group consisting of Verruca vulgaris, dermatitis, rosacea, and acne. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 29  wherein the dermatitis is selected from the group consisting of seboaheic dermatitis, hand dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. 
     
     
         31 . The composition of  claim 29 , wherein the PVP-I is present at between 0.5% and 5% (w/w). 
     
     
         32 . The composition of  claim 29 , wherein the composition further comprises a gel. 
     
     
         33 . The composition of  claim 29 , wherein the composition is anhydrous or substantially anhydrous. 
     
     
         34 . The composition of  claim 29 , further comprising an effective amount of at least one antifungal agent selected from the group consisting of tolnaftate, terbenifine, undecylenic acid, clioquinol, miconazole, miconazole nitrate, clorrinazole, tioconazole, nystatin, terconazoic, butoconazole nitrate, ciclopiro olamine, econazole nitrate, flucytosine, haloprogin, and ketoconazole. 
     
     
         35 . The composition of  claim 29  wherein the composition is substantially free or is free of a polyglycol. 
     
     
         36 . The composition of  claim 29 , wherein the infection is a fungal infection, a dermatophyte infection, a bacterial infection, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         37 . The composition of  claim 29  wherein the composition further comprises diethylene glycol monoethyl ether and propylene glycol. 
     
     
         38 . A method for treating a skin disease caused or complicated by microbial colonization or infection, said method comprising:
 providing a composition of  claim 29  and,   topically administering the composition to a patient in need of treatment of a skin disease caused or complicated by microbial colonization and/or infection.   
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 38  wherein the skin disease is dermatitis. 
     
     
         40 . The method of  claim 39  wherein the dermatitis is seborrheic dermatitis. 
     
     
         41 . The method of  claim 39 , wherein the dermatitis is hand dermatitis. 
     
     
         42 . The method of  claim 39 , wherein the dermatitis is atopic dermatitis. 
     
     
         43 . The method of  claim 38  wherein the skin disease is rosacea. 
     
     
         44 . The method of  claim 38  wherein the skin disease is acne. 
     
     
         45 . The method of  claim 38  wherein the skin disease is Verruca vulgaris.
