Pharmaceutical compositions

Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions are provided which comprise effective amounts of an analgesic to treat a subject, including to reduce or eliminate an adverse effect associated with the analgesic.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A liquid pharmaceutical composition, wherein the liquid pharmaceutical composition comprises:
 a. hydrocodone or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof that is present in an effective amount as an antitussive;   b. promethazine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof that is present in an effective amount as an antihistamine; and   c. at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.   
     
     
         2 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipient comprises citric acid or sorbitol. 
     
     
         3 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the liquid pharmaceutical composition further comprises an opioid antagonist or an agent for reducing abuse and/or diversion. 
     
     
         4 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the liquid pharmaceutical composition further comprises a flavoring agent. 
     
     
         5 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the hydrocodone is hydrocodone bitartrate. 
     
     
         6 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt of promethazine is promethazine hydrochloride. 
     
     
         7 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the hydrocodone or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is present in an amount of about 0.5 to about 30 mg. 
     
     
         8 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the hydrocodone or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is present in an amount of about 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 mg. 
     
     
         9 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the promethazine or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is present in an amount of about 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.5 mg, 2.0 mg, 2.5 mg, 3.0 mg, 3.5 mg, 4.0 mg, 4.5 mg, 5.0 mg, 5.5 mg, 6.0 mg, 6.5 mg, 7.0 mg, 7.5 mg, 8.0 mg, 8.5 mg, 9.0 mg, 9.5 mg, 10 mg, 10.5 mg, 11 mg, 11.5 mg, 12.0 mg, 12.5 mg, 13.0 mg, 13.5 mg, 14.0 mg, 14.5 mg, 15.0 mg, 15.5 mg, 16 mg, 16.5 mg, 17 mg, 17.5 mg, 18 mg, 18.5 mg, 19 mg, 19.5 mg or 20 mg, or 25 mg. 
     
     
         10 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the promethazine or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is present in an amount of about 12.5 mg. 
     
     
         11 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1 , wherein the liquid pharmaceutical composition further comprises a decongestant or expectorant. 
     
     
         12 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 11 , wherein the decongestant comprises phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine. 
     
     
         13 . The liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 11 , wherein the expectorant comprises guaifenesin. 
     
     
         14 . A method for treating a cough, the method comprising administering the liquid pharmaceutical composition of  claim 1  to a subject in need thereof. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein the administration occurs once, twice, or three times per day.
