Abstract
An oil pan assembly includes a first portion formed of a first plastic, and a second portion formed of a second plastic that differs from the first plastic. The first portion is securely coupled to the second portion. The first plastic may be one of a thermoset or a thermoplastic. The second plastic may be the other of the thermoset or the thermoplastic.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . An oil pan assembly, comprising:
a first portion formed of a first plastic; and a second portion formed of a second plastic that differs from the first plastic, wherein the first portion is securely coupled to the second portion.
2 . The oil pan assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first plastic is one of a thermoset or a thermoplastic, and wherein the second plastic is the other of the thermoset or the thermoplastic.
3 . The oil pan assembly of claim 2 , wherein the thermoset is Sheet Molding Compound, and the thermoplastic is Nylon 6/6.
4 . The oil pan assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is configured to be subjected to one or both of higher temperatures, higher impact, or higher forces than the second portion.
5 . The oil pan assembly of claim 4 , wherein the first portion is configured to be positioned proximate to one or more exhaust routings.
6 . The oil pan assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a perimeter wall, and the second portion comprises a base and a flange secured to the perimeter wall, and wherein an oil collection chamber is defined between the base and the perimeter wall.
7 . The oil pan assembly of claim 6 , wherein the base has a thickness at least twice a thickness of the perimeter wall.
8 . The oil pan assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is formed through compression molding, and wherein the second portion is overmolded onto the first portion.
9 . A method of forming an oil pan assembly, the method comprising:
forming a first portion of the oil pan assembly from a first plastic; forming a second portion of the oil pan assembly from a second plastic that differs from the first plastic; and securely coupling the first portion to the second portion.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first plastic is one of a thermoset or a thermoplastic, and wherein the second plastic is the other of the thermoset or the thermoplastic.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the thermoset is Sheet Molding Compound, and the thermoplastic is Nylon 6/6.
12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first portion is configured to be subjected to one or both of higher temperatures, higher impact, or higher forces than the second portion.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first portion is configured to be positioned proximate to one or more exhaust routings.
14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first portion comprises a perimeter wall, and wherein the second portion comprises a base and a flange secured to the perimeter wall, and wherein the securely coupling operation comprises defining an oil collection chamber between the base and the perimeter wall.
15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising forming the base with a thickness at least twice a thickness of the perimeter wall.
16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the forming the first portion comprises compression molding the first portion, and wherein the securely coupling operation comprises overmolding the second portion onto the first portion.
17 . An oil pan assembly, comprising:
a perimeter wall formed of a thermoset; and a base and flange formed of a thermoplastic, wherein the perimeter wall is securely coupled to the base and the flange, wherein an oil collection chamber is defined between the base and the perimeter wall, wherein the perimeter wall is configured to be subjected to one or both of higher temperatures, higher impact, or higher forces than the base and the flange, and wherein the perimeter wall is configured to be positioned proximate to one or more exhaust routings.
18 . The oil pan assembly of claim 17 , wherein the thermoset is Sheet Molding Compound, and the thermoplastic is Nylon 6/6.
19 . The oil pan assembly of claim 17 , wherein the base is at least twice the thickness of the perimeter wall.
20 . The oil pan assembly of claim 17 , wherein the first portion is formed through compression molding, and wherein the second portion is overmolded onto the first portion.Cited by (0)
