Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions and methods for the treatment of neurological disorders related to glutamate excitotoxicity and Amyloid β toxicity. More specifically, the present invention relates to novel combinatorial therapies of Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer's disease related disorders, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, neuropathic pain, alcoholic neuropathy, alcoholism or alcohol withdrawal, or spinal cord injury.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A method for treating a neurological disorder selected from Alzheimer's disease, an Alzheimer's related disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, neuropathic pain, alcoholic neuropathy, alcoholism or alcohol withdrawal, in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering to said subject (i) torasemide, or a salt or sustained release formulation thereof, in combination with (ii) at least one further compound selected from sulfisoxazole, methimazole, prilocaine, dyphylline, quinacrine, carbenoxolone, cabergoline, diethylcarbamazine, cinacalcet, cinnarizine, eplerenone, fenoldopam, leflunomide, sulodexide, terbinafine, zonisamide, etomidate, phenformin, trimetazidine, mexiletine, ifenprodil, moxifloxacin, or bromocriptine, or salt(s) or sustained release formulation(s) thereof. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , comprising administering at least one of the following combinations of compounds:
 sulfisoxazole and torasemide,   eplerenone and torasemide,   terbinafine and torasemide,   sulfisoxazole and trimetazidine and torasemide and zonisamide, or   sulfisoxazole and mexiletine and torasemide and cinacalcet,   or salts or sustained release formulations thereof.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the compounds in said combination are formulated with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the compounds in said combination are formulated or administered together, separately or sequentially. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the compounds are administered repeatedly to the subject.
