Abstract

A power management system for a lighting circuit may include a grid shifting controller that includes a processor and a connection to an external power source. The power management system may also include a communication interface associated with the grid shifting controller. The grid shifting controller may be configured to provide control information to a processor of at least one grid shifting electrical fixture over the communication interface, the control information being configured to direct the at least one grid shifting electrical fixture on the use of power from the external power source and an energy storage device associated with the at least one grid shifting electrical fixture.

         20 . A wirelessly controllable communication module, the communication module comprising:
 a camera configured to capture one or more images representative of at least a portion of the environment of the communication module;   a microphone configured to capture sound from the environment of the communication module;   a speaker configured to deliver sound to the environment of the communication module;   a motion detector configured to detect motion within the environment of the communication module;   a wireless communication interface configured to transmit and receive wireless signals to enable a wireless communication path between the wirelessly controllable communication module and a smart phone remotely located relative to the wirelessly controllable communication module; and   at least one processor configured to:
 cause transmission to the smart phone, over the wireless communication path, of a stream of data including the one or more images captured by the camera; cause transmission to the smart phone, over the wireless communication path, of a stream of data including the sound captured by the microphone; 
 cause playback, over the speaker, of audio signals received via the wireless communication path, wherein the audio signals are representative of a voice of a user of the smart phone; and 
 receive an output of the motion detector and store in memory a record of motion detections over time. 
   
     
     
         21 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to provide the record of motion detections over time to the smart phone, via the wireless communication path.

The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 21 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to provide the record of motion detections over time to the smart phone, via the wireless communication path. In response to a read request received from the smart phone.

The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive an output of the motion detector and cause transmission to the smart phone, over the wireless communication path, of a motion detection alert indicating a detected motion in the environment of the communication module.

The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to adjust a motion detection sensitivity level associated with the motion detector in response to a control signal received from the smart phone via the wireless communication path. 
     
     
         25 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:
 receive an output of the motion detector;   learn, based on observation of the output of the motion detector over a period of time, a motion pattern characteristic associated with motion observed within the environment of the communication module during at least a portion of the period of time; and   adjust at least one operational characteristic of the communication module based on the learned motion pattern characteristic.   
     
     
         26 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to cause the speaker to sound an alarm in response to a control signal received from the smart phone via the wireless communication path. 
     
     
         27 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the one or more images captured by the camera include a video stream. 
     
     
         28 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the motion detector includes at least one infrared sensor. 
     
     
         29 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein at least a portion of the wireless communication path includes a WiFi link.

The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 20 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive at least one of control instructions and programming instructions from the smart phone via the wireless communication path, and to cause at least one adjustment to a component of the wirelessly controllable communication module in response to the received at least one of control instructions and programming instructions from the smart phone. 
     
     
         31 . A wirelessly controllable communication module, the communication module comprising:
 a camera configured to capture one or more images representative of at least a portion of the environment of the communication module;   a microphone configured to capture sound from the environment of the communication module;   a speaker configured to deliver sound to the environment of the communication module;   a motion detector configured to detect motion within the environment of the communication module;   a wireless communication interface configured to transmit and receive wireless signals to enable a wireless communication path between the wirelessly controllable communication module and a smart phone remotely located relative to the wirelessly controllable communication module; and   at least one processor configured to:
 cause transmission to the smart phone, over the wireless communication path, of a stream of data including the one or more images captured by the camera; 
 cause transmission to the smart phone, over the wireless communication path, of a stream of data including the sound captured by the microphone; 
 cause playback over the speaker of audio signals received via the wireless communication path, wherein the audio signals are representative of a voice of a user of the smart phone; and 
 adjust a motion detection sensitivity level associated with the motion detector in response to a control signal received from the smart phone via the wireless communication path. 
   
     
     
         32 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 31 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive an output of the motion detector and store in memory a record of motion detections over time.

The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 32 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to provide the record of motion detections over time to the smart phone, via the wireless communication path. In response to a read request received from the smart phone.

The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 31 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive an output of the motion detector and cause transmission to the smart phone, over the wireless communication path, of a motion detection alert indicating a detected motion in the environment of the communication module. 
     
     
         35 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 31 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:
 receive an output of the motion detector;   learn, based on observation of the output of the motion detector over a period of time, a motion pattern characteristic associated with motion observed within the environment of the communication module during at least a portion of the period of time; and   adjust at least one operational characteristic of the communication module based on the learned motion pattern characteristic.   
     
     
         36 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 31 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to cause the speaker to sound an alarm in response to a control signal received from the smart phone via the wireless communication path. 
     
     
         37 . The wirelessly controllable communication module of  claim 31 , wherein the one or more images captured by the camera include a video stream.
