In-store mobile payment
Abstract
An in-store mobile payment system and method can facilitate the use of a user's mobile device to facilitate payment for products purchased at a store. The user can take a picture of a product being purchased or can take a picture of a bar code for the product. The picture can be taken with the user's mobile device and can be used to identify the product. A payment provider can provide a unique PIN code for the transaction. The user can enter the PIN code into a keypad of the merchant and/or can swipe a card with a card reader of the merchant to complete the transaction. Thus, the user can avoid the inconvenience of waiting in line at a checkout counter and the merchant can reduce the store's overhead by eliminating at least some checkout counters and checkout clerks.

2 . A system comprising:
a non-transitory memory; and one or more hardware processors coupled to the non-transitory memory and configured to read instructions from the non-transitory memory to cause the system to perform operations comprising:
receiving, from a mobile device over a network, a purchase transaction request comprising location data associated with the mobile device, image data corresponding to one or more products captured by a camera of the mobile device, and a identification corresponding to a user of the mobile device;
determining an identifier of a store based on the received location data;
determining one or more product identifiers for the one or more products based on the received image data;
constructing a code based on the user identification, the identifier of the store, and the one or more product identifiers;
transmitting the code to the mobile device over the network;
receiving, from a point-of-sale (POS) device of the store over the network, a communication comprising a user provided code and data related to a pending purchase including data identifying the user, a location of the POS device, and a set of products to be purchased by the user;
determining that the pending purchase is valid by verifying that the user provided code corresponds to both the code transmitted to the mobile device and the data related to the pending purchase; and
in response to receiving the user provided code and determining that the pending purchase is valid, processing the purchase transaction request based on a funding account associated with the user.
3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the user provided code is electronically transmitted from the mobile device to the POS device.
4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:
sending a request to verify the purchase transaction request to the mobile device; and receiving a verification from the mobile device, wherein sending the code is in response to receiving the verification from the mobile device.
5 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise accessing the funding account of the user to verify that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products using the funding account, wherein the code is transmitted to the mobile device in response to verifying that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products.
6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein verifying that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products using the funding account comprises comparing a balance of the funding account against a purchase amount associated with the purchase transaction request.
7 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the image data comprises at least one of an image of the one or more products or an image of one or more barcodes associated with the one or more products.
8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein determining the product identifier for the one or more products comprises deriving the product identifier from the image.
9 . A non-transitory machine-readable medium having stored thereon machine-readable instructions executable to cause a mobile device to perform operations comprising:
receiving, from a user, an indication to initiate a purchase transaction request associated with a purchase at a store; in response to receiving the indication, determining a location corresponding to the mobile device; activating a camera of the mobile device to capture image data corresponding to one or more products; analyzing the image data to derive one or more product identifiers associated with the one or more products; generating the purchase transaction request comprising a user identifier associated with the user, the location of the mobile device, and the derived one or more product identifiers; transmitting, over a network, the purchase transaction request to a payment service provider server associated with a payment service provider; receiving, from the payment service provider server over the network, a code representing the purchase, the code constructed based on the user identifier, the location data, and the one or more product identifiers; and transmitting, using a short-range wireless communication protocol, the code to a point-of-sale (POS) device of the store.
10 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the code is transmitted to the POS device in response to a user input on the mobile device.
11 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise:
receiving, from the payment service provider server over the network, a request to verify the purchase transaction request to the mobile device, wherein the request to verify the purchase transaction request comprises a total amount of the purchase; and transmitting a verification to the payment service provider server, wherein the code is received from the payment service provider server in response to transmitting the verification.
12 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the image data comprises one or more barcodes associated with the one or more products, and wherein analyzing the image data to derive one or more product identifiers comprises interpreting the one or more barcodes to derive the one or more product identifiers.
13 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the image data comprises images of the one or more products, and wherein analyzing the image data comprises performing an object recognition algorithm on the image data to determine the one or more products.
14 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein determining the location corresponding to the mobile device comprises obtaining location data from a location component of the mobile device.
15 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein determining the location corresponding to the mobile device comprises capturing second image data related to the location and analyzing the second image data to derive the location.
16 . The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise accessing a funding account of the user to verify that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products using the funding account.
17 . A method comprising:
receiving, by one or more hardware processors from a mobile device over a network, a purchase transaction request comprising location data associated with the mobile device, image data corresponding to one or more products captured by a camera of the mobile device, and a user identification corresponding to a user of the mobile device; determining, by the one or more hardware processors, an identifier of a store based on the received location data; determining, by the one or more hardware processors, one or more product identifiers for the one or more products based on the received image data; constructing, by the one or more hardware processors, a code based on the user identification, the identifier of the store, and the one or more product identifiers; transmitting, by the one or more hardware processors, the code to the mobile device over the network; receiving, by the one or more hardware processors from a point-of-sale (POS) device of the store over the network, a communication comprising a user provided code and data related to a pending purchase including data identifying the user, a location of the POS device, and a set of products to be purchased by the user; determining, by the one or more hardware processors, that the pending purchase is valid by verifying that the user provided code corresponds to both the code transmitted to the mobile device and the data related to the pending purchase; and in response to receiving the user input code and determining that the pending purchase is valid, processing, by the one or more hardware processors, the purchase transaction request based on a funding account associated with the user.
18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:
sending a request to verify the purchase transaction request to the mobile device; and receiving a verification from the mobile device, wherein sending the code is in response to receiving the verification from the mobile device.
19 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising accessing the funding account of the user to verify that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products using the funding account, wherein the code is transmitted to the mobile device in response to verifying that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products.
20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein verifying that the user is authorized to purchase the one or more products using the funding account comprises comparing a balance of the funding account against a purchase amount associated with the purchase transaction request.
