Abstract

A mandrel for a downhole tool may include a body having a proximate end; a distal end; and an outer surface. The mandrel may have a first outer diameter at the proximate end, and a second outer diameter at the distal end. There may be an angled linear transition surface therebetween. An end of the mandrel at the proximate end may have an at least one protrusion. The at least one protrusion may have an elevated portion and a lowered portion. The mandrel may be made a composite material.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A mandrel for a downhole tool, the mandrel comprising:
a body having a proximate end; a distal end; and an outer surface, wherein the body comprises a first outer diameter at the proximate end, a second outer diameter at the distal end, and an angled linear transition surface therebetween; and wherein an end of the mandrel at the proximate end comprises an at least one protrusion, wherein the at least one protrusion transitions from an elevated portion to a lowered portion, wherein the mandrel is made of a composite material.

2 . The mandrel of claim 1 , wherein the composite material is filament wound, wherein the mandrel further comprises a flowbore, and wherein the flowbore extends from the proximate end to the distal end.

3 . The mandrel of claim 2 , wherein the mandrel comprises an inner surface along the flowbore, wherein a set of shear threads are formed on the inner surface.

4 . The mandrel of claim 3 , wherein the mandrel comprises a set of rounded threads on the outer surface at the distal end.

5 . The mandrel of claim 1 , wherein a circumferential taper is formed on the outer surface near the proximate end, wherein the circumferential taper is formed at an angle φ of about 5 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of the mandrel, and the length of the circumferential taper is about 0.5 inches to about 0.75 inches, and wherein the proximate end comprises a ball seat configured to receive a drop ball.

6 . The mandrel of claim 5 , wherein the mandrel comprises a flowbore with an inner surface therein, wherein a ball seat is formed on the inner surface, the ball seat having a radius configured with a rounded edge.

7 . A mandrel for a downhole tool, the mandrel comprising:
a body having a proximate end; a distal end; and an outer surface, wherein the body comprises a first outer diameter at the proximate end, a second outer diameter at the distal end, and an angled linear transition surface therebetween; and a flowbore between the proximate end and the distal end wherein the mandrel is made from composite filament wound material, and wherein the first outer diameter is larger than the second outer diameter, and wherein an end of the mandrel at the proximate end comprises an at least one protrusion.

8 . The mandrel of claim 7 , wherein the at least one protrusion transitions from an elevated portion to a lowered portion, and wherein a set of rounded threads are disposed on the outer surface at the distal end.

9 . The mandrel of claim 7 , wherein a circumferential taper is formed on the outer surface near the proximate end, wherein the circumferential taper is formed at an angle φ of about 5 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of the mandrel, and the length of the circumferential taper is about 0.5 inches to about 0.75 inches, and wherein a set of shear threads disposed on an inner surface of the flowbore at the proximate end.

10 . The mandrel of claim 7 , wherein the mandrel comprises a ball seat is formed on the inner surface, the ball seat having a radius configured with a rounded edge, and wherein the at least one protrusion transitions from an elevated portion to a lowered portion.

11 . A mandrel for a downhole tool, the mandrel comprising:
a body having a proximate end; a distal end; and an outer surface, wherein the body comprises a first outer diameter at the proximate end, and a second outer diameter at the distal end; a first set of threads disposed on the outer surface at the distal end; and a flowbore extending from the distal end to the proximate end, wherein the first outer diameter is larger than the second outer diameter, and wherein a lateral end of the mandrel at the proximate end comprises an at least one protrusion

12 . The mandrel of claim 11 , wherein the mandrel is made from a composite material.

13 . The mandrel of claim 12 , wherein the mandrel further comprises a ball seat formed on an inner surface of the flowbore, the ball seat having a radius configured with a rounded edge.

14 . The mandrel of claim 13 , wherein the mandrel comprises an inner surface along the flowbore, and a set of shear threads are formed on the inner surface, and wherein the first set of threads comprise rounded threads.

15 . The mandrel of claim 14 , wherein a circumferential taper is formed on the outer surface near the proximate end, and wherein the circumferential taper is formed at an angle φ of about 5 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of the mandrel, and the length of the circumferential taper is about 0.5 inches to about 0.75 inches.
