Abstract

A method of promoting the generation of oligodendrocytes from oligodendrocyte precursor cells by enhancing their survival and/or maturation includes administering to the cell an effective amount of an agent that enhances and/or induces accumulation of Δ8,9-unsaturated sterol intermediates of the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway in the oligodendrocyte precursor cells.

1 - 58 . (canceled)

59 . A method of enhancing the generation of oligodendrocytes in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering an effective amount of Cis-N-cyclohexyl-N-ethyl-3-(3-chloro-4-cyclohexylphenyl)prop-2-enylamine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to the subject.

60 . The method of claim 59 , wherein the method is a method of treating a subject with a myelin related disorder, comprising administering an effective amount of Cis-N-cyclohexyl-N-ethyl-3-(3-chloro-4-cyclohexylphenyl)prop-2-enylamine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to the subject.

61 . The method of claim 60 , wherein the myelin related disorder is multiple sclerosis.

62 . The method of claim 61 , further comprising the step of co-administering to the subject an effective amount of interferon beta-la, interferon beta-lb, natalizumab, natalizumab, glatiramer acetate, mitoxantrone, L-dopa, a cholinesterase inhibitor, an anticholinergic, a dopamine agonist or a steroid.
