Zinc Oxide Powder Blends, Their Production and Use

Abstract

This disclosure provides sunscreen products that contain metal oxide powders having discrete size distributions. Metal oxide powders include, for example, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Sunscreen products made in accordance with the principles of this disclosure contain metal oxide powders having primary particle sizes of about 10-30 nm and about 50-200 nm.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A dispersion or powdered sunscreen ingredient comprising a first zinc oxide ingredient manufactured by a first manufacturing process and a second zinc oxide ingredient manufactured by a second different manufacturing process. 
     
     
         2 . A sunscreen ingredient as in  claim 1 , wherein said first zinc oxide ingredient and said second zinc oxide ingredient are selected to have an SPF to UVA protection ratio of at least 3 to 1. 
     
     
         3 . A sunscreen ingredient as in  claim 1  wherein said first zinc oxide ingredient is selected to target blockage of the UVA component of sunlight and said second zinc oxide ingredient is selected to talk it blockage of the UVB component of sunlight.
