Abstract

Methods and devices to detect analyte in body fluid are provided. Embodiments include enhanced analyte monitoring devices and systems.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An analyte monitoring system, comprising:
 an analyte sensor for transcutaneous positioning under a skin surface;   a data processing device operatively coupled to the analyte sensor, the data processing device comprising:
 a control unit; 
 a memory operatively coupled to the control unit and configured to store a plurality of data associated with a monitored analyte level received from the analyte sensor; and 
 a communication unit operatively coupled to the control unit to establish a communication link; and 
   a receiver device configured for signal communication with the data processing device over the communication link;   wherein when the communication link is established between the data processing device and the receiver device, the control unit is further configured to retrieve the stored plurality of data from the memory and to communicate the retrieved stored plurality of data to the receiver device in accordance with a predetermined transmission schedule, when the receiver device is placed within a predetermined distance from the data processing device; and   wherein the analyte sensor is factory calibrated.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver device comprises at least one of a personal digital assistant, mobile phone, or drug delivery device. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the communication unit is configured to establish the communication link with the receiver device using at least two of an RF communication protocol, an infrared communication protocol, a Bluetooth communication protocol, or an 802.11x wireless communication protocol. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver device is configured to determine a rate of change of the monitored analyte level, and to provide an alarm when the rate of change of the monitored analyte level is above a predetermined level. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver device is configured to determine at least the monitored analyte level based on the retrieved stored plurality of data communicated to the receiver device, without a user intervention. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 5 , wherein the receiver device to determine at least the monitored analyte level based on the retrieved stored plurality of data communicated to the receiver device, without a user initiated calibration. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the analyte sensor is configured to operate over a predetermined period of time, wherein the stored plurality of data corresponds to the monitored analyte level over the predetermined period of time, and wherein the memory of the data processing device is configured to store at most the plurality of data. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the predetermined period of time corresponds to a wear period of the analyte sensor, and wherein the wear period is at least seven days. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 8 , wherein the analyte sensor is a glucose sensor for detection of glucose level, and wherein the memory of the data processing device does not store data from the sensor after the wear period. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiver device is configured to display the retrieved stored plurality of data communicated to the receiver device as the retrieved stored plurality of data is received from the data processing device. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the analyte sensor comprises a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode comprising an analyte-responsive enzyme bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the analyte-responsive enzyme is chemically bonded to the polymer. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 11 , wherein the working electrode further comprises a mediator. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the analyte sensor comprises a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode comprising a mediator bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14 , wherein the mediator is chemically bonded to the polymer. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the predetermined transmission schedule includes data transmission of one or more of every minute, every two minutes, every five minutes, every ten minutes, every fifteen minutes, or one or more combinations thereof. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the analyte sensor is calibrated with a reference measurement. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 17 , wherein the reference measurement is a blood glucose measurement. 
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the receiver device comprises an interface to receive the blood glucose measurement from a user. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the receiver device is configured to receive the blood glucose measurement from a different device.
