Abstract

A curable aqueous composition is disclosed comprising a carbohydrate, a crosslinking agent, and an amine base, wherein the curable aqueous composition has a pH adjusted by the amine base. Further disclosed is a method of forming a curable aqueous solution.

1 . A binder, comprising:
 Maillard reactants including (i) an amine and (ii) a carbohydrate, wherein the binder is (i) uncured and (ii) formaldehyde free.   
     
     
         2 . The binder of  claim 1 , wherein: the amine includes an ammonium salt of a monomeric polycarboxylic acid. 
     
     
         3 . The binder of  claim 1 , wherein: the amine includes an ammonium salt of a polymeric polycarboxylic acid. 
     
     
         4 . The binder of  claim 1 , wherein: the carbohydrate includes a monosaccharide. 
     
     
         5 . The binder of  claim 4 , wherein: the monosaccharide includes a reducing sugar. 
     
     
         6 . The binder of  claim 5 , wherein: the reducing sugar includes at least one of the following, dextrose, xylose, fructose, and dihydroxyacetone. 
     
     
         7 . The binder of  claim 1 , further comprising: a silicon-containing compound. 
     
     
         8 . The binder of  claim 7 , wherein: the silicon-containing compound is amino-substituted. 
     
     
         9 . The binder of  claim 7 , wherein: the silicon-containing compound is a silyl ether. 
     
     
         10 . The binder of  claim 7 , wherein: the silicon-containing compound includes at least one of the following, gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, aminoethylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane, and n-propylamine silane. 
     
     
         11 . The binder of  claim 1 , further comprising: a corrosion inhibitor. 
     
     
         12 . The binder of  claim 11 , wherein: the corrosion inhibitor includes at least one of the following, dedusting oil, monoammonium phosphate, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, melamine, tm(II)oxalate, and a methylhydrogen silicone fluid emulsion. 
     
     
         13 . The binder of  claim 1 , wherein the binder is an aqueous solution having an alkaline pH. 
     
     
         14 . The binder of  claim 1 , wherein the binder is dehydrated. 
     
     
         15 . A binder, comprising:
 (i) one or more Maillard reaction products and (ii) a silicon-containing compound, wherein the binder is (i) cured and (ii) formaldehyde free.   
     
     
         16 . The binder of  claim 15 , wherein: the silicon-containing compound is amino-substituted. 
     
     
         17 . The binder of  claim 15 , wherein: the silicon-containing compound is a silyl ether. 
     
     
         18 . The binder of  claim 15 , wherein: the silicon-containing compound includes at least one of the following, gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, aminoethylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane, and n-propylamine silane. 
     
     
         19 . A binder, comprising:
 (i) one or more Maillard reaction products and (ii) a corrosion inhibitor, wherein the binder is (i) cured and (ii) formaldehyde free.   
     
     
         20 . The binder of  claim 19 , wherein: the corrosion inhibitor includes at least one of the following, dedusting oil, monoammonium phosphate, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, melamine, tin(II)oxalate, and a methylhydrogen silicone fluid emulsion. 
     
     
         21 . The binder of  claim 19 , wherein: the Maillard reaction products include one or more melanoidins. 
     
     
         22 . The binder of  claim 19 , further comprising: one or more polyester compounds. 
     
     
         23 . A material, comprising: a collection of matter; and a binder disposed on the matter, wherein the material is formaldehyde free; and the binder includes (i) at least two Maillard reactants and (ii) a silicon-containing compound. 
     
     
         24 . The material of  claim 23 , wherein: the collection of matter includes glass fibers. 
     
     
         25 . The material of  claim 23 , wherein: the collection of matter includes cellulosic fibers. 
     
     
         26 . A material, comprising: a collection of matter; and a binder disposed on the matter, wherein the material is formaldehyde free; and the binder includes (i) at least two Maillard reactants and (ii) a corrosion inhibitor. 
     
     
         27 . The material of  claim 26 , wherein: the collection of matter includes glass fibers. 
     
     
         28 . The material of  claim 26 , wherein: the collection of matter includes cellulosic fibers. 
     
     
         29 . A material, comprising: a collection of matter contacted with the binder of  claim 1 , wherein the binder is dehydrated. 
     
     
         30 . A material, comprising: a collection of matter contacted with the binder of  claim 1 , wherein the binder is cured. 
     
     
         31 . A material, comprising: a collection of cellulosic matter; and a binder disposed on the cellulosic matter, wherein the binder (i) is uncured, (ii) includes at least two Maillard reactants; and the material is formaldehyde free. 
     
     
         32 . A binder, comprising: an amine; a carbohydrate; and a silicon-containing compound, wherein the binder is (i) uncured and (ii) formaldehyde free. 
     
     
         33 . The binder of  claim 32 , wherein the binder has an alkaline pH. 
     
     
         34 . A binder, comprising: an amine; a carbohydrate; and corrosion inhibitor, wherein the binder is (i) uncured and (ii) formaldehyde free.
