Abstract

A device may receive an indication to generate a probe packet associated with a tunnel included in a first network. The tunnel may include a first tunnel endpoint and a second tunnel endpoint and may correspond to a path, associated with a second network, between the first tunnel endpoint and the second tunnel endpoint. The device may generate the probe packet including information associated with the tunnel. The device may provide the probe packet, via the first tunnel endpoint, such that the probe packet is received by a network device that lies on the path. The device may receive a response packet, associated with the probe packet and provided by the network device, that includes path information. The path information may include information associated with the network device. The device may store the path information to allow the network device to be identified as lying on the path.

         21 . A device, comprising:
 a memory; and   one or more processors to:
 receive an overlay probe packet associated with an overlay tunnel; 
 parse the overlay probe packet; 
 store, based on parsing the overlay probe packet, state information associated with the overlay tunnel; and 
 provide, based on storing the state information, a response packet that includes underlay path information associated with the overlay tunnel,
 the underlay path information indicating that the device lies on an underlay path. 
 
   
     
     
         22 . The device of  claim 21 , where the one or more processors are further to:
 provide, based on receiving the overlay probe packet and based on a counter value, the overlay probe packet to another device.   
     
     
         23 . The device of  claim 21 , where the response packet further includes at least one of:
 information associated with the overlay tunnel,   information that identifies an interface via which traffic, associated with the overlay tunnel, is sent, or   information that identifies an interface via which traffic, associated with the overlay tunnel, is received.   
     
     
         24 . The device of  claim 21 , where the one or more processors are further to:
 decrement a counter value based on receiving the overlay probe packet; and   where the one or more processors, when parsing the overlay probe packet, are to:
 parse, based on decrementing the counter value, the overlay probe packet. 
   
     
     
         25 . The device of  claim 21 , where the state information includes information associated with the overlay tunnel that passes traffic via the underlay path. 
     
     
         26 . The device of  claim 21 , where the state information includes at least one of:
 information that identifies an overlay network associated with the overlay tunnel,   information that identifies a tunnel endpoint associated with the overlay tunnel, or   information that identifies a virtual machine.   
     
     
         27 . The device of  claim 21 , where the one or more processors are further to:
 determine that the overlay tunnel has been terminated; and   delete, based on determining that the overlay tunnel has been terminated, the state information.   
     
     
         28 . A method, comprising:
 receiving, by a device, an overlay probe packet associated with an overlay tunnel;   parsing, by the device, the overlay probe packet;   storing, by the device based on parsing the overlay probe packet, state information associated with the overlay tunnel; and   providing, by the device based on storing the state information, a response packet that includes underlay path information associated with the overlay tunnel,
 the underlay path information indicating that the device lies on an underlay path. 
   
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 28 , further comprising:
 providing, based on receiving the overlay probe packet and based on a counter value, the overlay probe packet to another device.   
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 28 , where the response packet further includes at least one of:
 information associated with the overlay tunnel,   information that identifies an interface via which traffic, associated with the overlay tunnel, is sent, or   information that identifies an interface via which traffic, associated with the overlay tunnel, is received.   
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 28 , further comprising:
 decrementing a counter value based on receiving the overlay probe packet; and   where parsing the overlay probe packet comprises:
 parsing, based on decrementing the counter value, the overlay probe packet. 
   
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 28 , where the state information includes information associated with the overlay tunnel that passes traffic via the underlay path. 
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 28 , where the state information includes at least one of:
 information that identifies an overlay network associated with the overlay tunnel,   information that identifies a tunnel endpoint associated with the overlay tunnel, or   information that identifies a virtual machine.   
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 28 , further comprising:
 determine that the overlay tunnel has been terminated; and   delete, based on determining that the overlay tunnel has been terminated, the state information.   
     
     
         35 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions, the instructions comprising:
 one or more instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a device, cause the one or more processors to:
 receive an overlay probe packet associated with an overlay tunnel; 
 parse the overlay probe packet; 
 store, based on parsing the overlay probe packet, state information associated with the overlay tunnel; and 
 provide, based on storing the state information, a response packet that includes underlay path information associated with the overlay tunnel,
 the underlay path information indicating that the device lies on an underlay path. 
 
   
     
     
         36 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 35 , where the one or more instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:
 provide, based on receiving the overlay probe packet and based on a counter value, the overlay probe packet to another device.   
     
     
         37 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 35 , where the response packet further includes at least one of:
 information associated with the overlay tunnel,   information that identifies an interface via which traffic, associated with the overlay tunnel, is sent, or   information that identifies an interface via which traffic, associated with the overlay tunnel, is received.   
     
     
         38 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 35 , where the one or more instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:
 decrement a counter value based on receiving the overlay probe packet; and   where the one or more instructions, that cause the one or more processors to parse the overlay probe packet, cause the one or more processors:
 parse, based on decrementing the counter value, the overlay probe packet. 
   
     
     
         39 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 35 , where the state information includes information associated with the overlay tunnel that passes traffic via the underlay path. 
     
     
         40 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 35 , where the one or more instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:
 determine that the overlay tunnel has been terminated; and   delete, based on determining that the overlay tunnel has been terminated, the state information.
