Abstract

A sports electronic training system, and applications thereof, are disclosed. In an embodiment, a portable performance monitoring system for monitoring an individual's performance during a physical activity includes a motion monitor adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity and a portable electronic processing device adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity. The portable electronic processing device includes a wireless personal-area network transceiver adapted for wireless communication with the motion monitor, a memory adapted to store workout program data, a processor adapted to determine performance information for the individual, and an output adapted to provide feedback to the individual based on the performance information and the workout program data.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A portable performance monitoring system for monitoring an individual's performance during a physical activity, the portable performance monitoring system comprising:
 a motion monitor adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity; and   a portable electronic processing device adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity, the portable electronic processing device comprising:
 a wireless personal-area network transceiver adapted for wireless communication with the motion monitor; 
 a memory adapted to store workout program data for the activity; 
 a processor adapted to determine performance information for the individual; and 
 an output adapted to provide real-time feedback to the individual during the activity based on the performance information and the workout program data, 
   wherein the real-time feedback comprises a continuous indication of how the individual's current physical activity intensity level as indicated by the performance information compares to a predetermined range of physical activity intensity levels as indicated by the workout program data.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the motion monitor comprises an accelerometer. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the motion monitor comprises a satellite positioning system receiver. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the performance information for the individual is determined based on data received from the motion monitor. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the feedback comprises an indication that the individual should adjust the intensity of the physical activity. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the memory is further adapted to store music data, and wherein the output is further adapted to output music to the individual. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the portable electronic processing device further comprises a wireless wide-area network transceiver adapted to communicate with a remotely located device. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the feedback is further based on data received from the remotely located device. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 1 , further comprising a wrist display adapted to be physically coupled to the individual's wrist during the activity and further adapted for wireless communication with the portable electronic processing device. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the wrist display further comprises a tactile feedback component for providing a tactile feedback to the individual. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 1 , further comprising a heart rate monitor adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity and further adapted for wireless communication with the portable electronic processing device. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 1 , further comprising a sport ball adapted for wireless communication with the portable electronic processing device, wherein the sport ball comprises a second motion monitor. 
     
     
         13 . A portable performance monitoring system for monitoring an individual's performance during a physical activity, the portable performance monitoring system comprising:
 a heart rate monitor adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity; and   a portable electronic processing device adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity, the portable electronic processing device comprising:
 a wireless personal-area network transceiver adapted for wireless communication with the heart rate monitor; 
 a memory adapted to store workout program data for the activity; 
 a processor adapted to determine performance information for the individual; and 
 an output adapted to provide real-time feedback to the individual during the activity based on the performance information and the workout program data, 
   wherein the real-time feedback comprises an indication of how the individual's current physical activity intensity level as indicated by the performance information compares to a predetermined range of physical activity intensity levels as indicated by the workout program data, and   wherein the indication is provided only when the individual's current physical activity intensity level is outside of the predetermined range of physical activity intensity levels.   
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the heart rate monitor comprises a chest strap. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14 , wherein the chest strap comprises a body fat sensor. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the heart rate monitor comprises a blood flow sensor. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the performance information for the individual is determined based on data received from the heart rate monitor. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the feedback comprises an indication that the individual should adjust the intensity of the physical activity. 
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the memory is further adapted to store music data, and wherein the output is further adapted to output music to the individual. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the portable electronic processing device further comprises a wireless wide-area network transceiver adapted to communicate with a remotely located device. 
     
     
         21 . The system of  claim 20 , wherein the feedback is further based on data received from the remotely located device. 
     
     
         22 . The system of  claim 13 , further comprising a wrist display adapted to be physically coupled to the individual's wrist during the activity and further adapted for wireless communication with the portable electronic processing device. 
     
     
         23 . The system of  claim 22 , wherein the wrist display further comprises a tactile feedback component for providing a tactile feedback to the individual. 
     
     
         24 . The system of  claim 23 , wherein the tactile feedback comprises pressure pulsations. 
     
     
         25 . The system of  claim 13 , further comprising a motion monitor adapted to be physically coupled to the individual during the activity and further adapted for wireless communication with the portable electronic processing device. 
     
     
         26 . The system of  claim 13 , further comprising a sport ball adapted for wireless communication with the portable electronic processing device, wherein the sport ball comprises a motion monitor.
