Abstract

Provided herein are systems, devices and methods for performing multianalyte detection in a biological sample, such as a human blood sample. Multiwell plates useful for performing multianalyte detection are also provided. The systems, devices and methods provided herein relate to the field of direct-to-consumer diagnostics (DTC diagnostics) and are useful, e.g., for facilitating consumer access to consumer healthcare and consumer wellness information. Other uses of the systems, devices and methods provided herein relate to the fields of medical research and drug discovery.

         134 . A system comprising:
 a light source;   a detector comprising:
 a fluorescence detection module; 
 an absorbance reader; and 
 a cell-enumeration module; 
   a platform configured for movement of a multiwell plate underneath the fluorescence detection module, absorbance reader, and/or the cell-enumeration module, the multiwell plate having a plurality of wells disposed therein that are configured to receive a liquid sample;   a liquid handling device to transfer liquids to the wells of the multiwell plate; and   a housing encapsulating each of the light source, detector, liquid handling device, and platform.   
     
     
         135 . The system of  claim 134 , wherein the platform is configured to rotate the multiwell plate underneath each of the fluorescence detection module, absorbance reader, and the cell-enumeration module. 
     
     
         136 . The system of  claim 134 , wherein the liquid handling device is a piezoelectric or acoustic liquid dispenser configured to transfer aqueous liquid from a liquid reservoir within the housing into a well of the multiwell plate. 
     
     
         137 . The system of  claim 134  further comprising the multiwell plate. 
     
     
         138 . The system of  claim 137 , wherein the plurality of wells are organized in concentric circles around a center of the multiwell plate. 
     
     
         139 . The system of  claim 138 , wherein the plurality of wells is arranged in a spokes-like arrangement. 
     
     
         140 . The system of  claim 139 , wherein the multiwell plate further comprises one or more troughs. 
     
     
         141 . The system of  claim 137 , wherein the multiwell plate comprises two or more different pluralities of wells, wherein the two or more different pluralities of wells differ with respect to their respective shape, dimension, optical properties, and/or surface properties.

The system of  claim 137 , wherein the wells of the multiwell plate include a first subset of the wells each having a well bottom that is translucent for light of a wavelength between 200 nm and 850 nm and a second subset of wells each having a well bottom that is opaque for light of a wavelength between 200 nm and 850 nm. 
     
     
         143 . The system of  claim 138 , wherein there are at least two concentric circles of wells and each concentric circle includes a different type of well. 
     
     
         144 . The system of  claim 143 , wherein a plurality of wells on an outer concentric circle has a smaller diameter or a smaller volume than a different plurality of wells on an inner concentric circle. 
     
     
         145 . The system of  claim 143 , wherein a plurality of wells on a first circle of wells each comprise a translucent well bottom and a plurality of wells on a second circle of wells each comprise an opaque well bottom.

The system of  claim 134 , wherein the liquid handler is configured to deliver, to a first subset of the wells of the multiwell plate, a first type of reagent for a first type of assay and is configured to deliver, to a second subset of the wells of the multiwell plate, a second type of reagent for a second type of assay. 
     
     
         147 . The system of  claim 134  further comprising
 a sample preparation station to prepare the liquid sample for multianalyte detection comprising:
 a filtration unit or centrifugation unit; and 
 a sample dilution device. 
 
 
     
     
         148 . The system of  claim 147 , wherein the sample preparation station comprises a sample quality control station to assess sample contamination or sample variability. 
     
     
         149 . The system of  claim 134 , wherein the platform comprises a plate holder that contacts a bottom surface of the multiwell plate. 
     
     
         150 . The system of  claim 149  further comprising:
 a barcode reader configured to read a barcode on a multiwell plate placed on the platform. 
 
     
     
         151 . The system of  claim 134 , wherein the multiwell plate comprises a barcode. 
     
     
         152 . The system of  claim 151 , wherein the barcode encodes information characterizing a layout of the multiwell plate, analyte panels to be assayed using the multiwell plate, and/or multiwell plate manufacturing information. 
     
     
         153 . The system of  claim 134 , wherein the multiwell plate comprises reagents for two or more different analyte assays in two or more different pluralities of wells. 
     
     
         154 . The system of  claim 134  further comprising:
 a storage unit for storing two or more multiwell plates. 
 
     
     
         155 . An apparatus for use with a multiwell plate having a plurality of concentric wells into which a liquid sample has been placed, the apparatus comprising:
 a light source configured to emit light at or through at least a subset of the wells;   a liquid handling device to transfer liquids to the wells of the multiwell plate;   a detector comprising a plurality of different types of detection modules;   a platform configured for circular movement of the multiwell plate underneath the detection modules to enable characterization of the liquid sample; and   a chassis encapsulating each of the light source, detector, liquid handling device, and platform.   
     
     
         156 . An apparatus for use with a multiwell plate having a plurality of concentric wells into which a liquid sample has been placed, the apparatus comprising:
 means for emitting light;   a liquid handling device to transfer reagents to the wells of the multiwell plate;   means for detecting differing types of analytes within the liquid sample;   means for moving the multiwell plate underneath the means for detecting different types of analytes; and   a chassis housing each of the light source, detector, liquid handling device, and platform.
