Abstract

Methods and compositions for treating stroke are disclosed.

         23 . A method of treating spinal cord injury (SCI) in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject a VLA-1 antagonist in an amount effective to treat SCI. 
     
     
         24 . A method of treating spinal cord injury (SCI) in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject an anti-VLA-1 antibody, or an antigen-binding fragment thereof. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 23 , wherein the SCI is selected from the group consisting of incomplete SCI, central cord syndrome, Brown-Sequard syndrome, anterior cord syndrome, conus medullaris syndrome and cauda equina syndrome. 
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the anti-VLA-1 antibody, or antigen-binding fragment thereof, is a human, chimeric or humanized anti-VLA-1 antibody, or an antigen-binding fragment thereof.

         28 . A method of treating ischemia-reperfusion injury in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject a blocking VLA-1 antibody, or antigen-binding fragment thereof, in an amount effective to treat the injury.
