Abstract

Methods of reducing dermal penetration of at least one active ingredient in a topically applied product using compositions comprising siloxane polymers are disclosed. In some aspects, the active ingredient is an antimicrobial agent, especially benzalkonium chloride, 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride, and combinations thereof.

Claims

         and mixtures thereof, wherein R e is (C 6 -C 22 ) alkyl and X − is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride, bromide, fluoride, iodide, sulfonate, and acetate.

         23 . The topical composition of claim 22 , wherein the methylsiloxane cyclic having 4 or 5 silicon atoms comprises cyclopentasiloxane.

         24 . The topical composition of claim 22 , wherein the alkoxylated derivative of a benzyl alcohol comprises PPG-3 benzyl ether ethylhexanoate.

         25 . The topical composition of claim 22 , wherein the additional component is selected from the group consisting of an essential oil, fragrance, Vitamin E, insect repellant, Green Tea Extract, and organic UV absorber.

         26 . A method of reducing dermal penetration of an active ingredient, comprising:
 applying to a user's skin a composition comprising   a siloxane gel comprising a dimethicone crosspolymer;
 a methylsiloxane cyclic having 4 or 5 silicon atoms;
 an alkoxylated derivative of a benzyl alcohol;
 an additional component selected from the group consisting of methylsiloxane cyclics having 4 and 5 silicon atoms, a trimethylsiloxy end-blocked polydimethylsiloxane, ester of aromatic alkoxylated alcohol and fatty carboxylic acid, alkoxylated derivatives of benzyl alcohol, aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, amines, esters, ethers, glycols, glycol ethers, alkyl halides, aromatic halides, acetonitrile, nitromethane, dimethylforamide, propylene oxide, trioctyl phosphate, butyrolactone, furfural, pine oil, turpentine, m-creosol, volatile flavoring compound, volatile fragrance compound, and mixtures thereof; and
 an active ingredient selected from the group consisting of:

           and mixtures thereof, wherein R e is (C 6 -C 22 ) alkyl and X − is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride, bromide, fluoride, iodide, sulfonate, and acetate.

         27 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising:
 topically applying said composition to the skin of a user; drying said topically applied composition; topically reapplying said composition to the skin of said user at least one time; and drying said topically reapplied composition.

         28 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the methylsiloxane cyclic having 4 or 5 silicon atoms comprises cyclopentasiloxane.

         29 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the alkoxylated derivative of a benzyl alcohol comprises PPG-3 benzyl ether ethylhexanoate.

         30 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the additional component is selected from the group consisting of essential oil, fragrance, Vitamin E, insect repellant, Green Tea Extract, and organic UV absorber.
