Single-trip casing cutting and bridge plug setting
Abstract
A downhole tool includes a section mill, a bridge plug, and a connector releasably coupling the section mill to the bridge plug. A guide is coupled to the connector and maintains the section mill centered within a wellbore during sue of the section mill. A method for setting a bridge plug and cutting casing includes deploying a tool string downhole in a wellbore, with the tool string including a casing cutting tool releasably coupled to a bridge plug. The bridge plug is set within the wellbore and the casing cutting tool is released from the bridge plug. In the same trip during which the bride plug is set, the casing cutting tool is expanded and used to remove an axial section of casing while maintaining the casing cutting tool centered within the casing.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A downhole tool, comprising:
a section mill; a bridge plug; and a connector releasably coupling the section mill to the bridge plug; and a guide coupled to the connector and configured to maintain the section mill centered within a wellbore during use of the section mill.
2 . The downhole tool of claim 1 , the guide being positioned between the bridge plug and the section mill.
3 . The downhole tool of claim 1 , the guide including a lead mill.
4 . The downhole tool of claim 3 , the connector coupling the bridge plug to a face of the lead mill.
5 . The downhole tool of claim 3 , the lead mill including a plurality of blades and the connector including a plurality of slots receiving the plurality of blades.
6 . The downhole tool of claim 1 , the connector including at shear element configured to shear to release the section mill from the bridge plug and the guide.
7 . The downhole tool of claim 1 , further comprising:
an expandable reamer coupled to the section mill.
8 . The downhole tool of claim 7 , the section mill being positioned between the expandable reamer and the bridge plug.
9 . A downhole tool, consisting essentially of:
a section mill configured to cut casing using a plurality of expandable cutting knives; a stabilizer coupled to the section mill; a bridge plug; and a connector releasably coupling the bridge plug to the stabilizer.
10 . The downhole tool of claim 9 , the stabilizer including a lead mill.
11 . The downhole tool of claim 9 , the stabilizer being positioned between the connector and the section mill.
12 . The downhole tool of claim 9 , the connector including at least one shear element.
13 . The downhole tool of claim 9 , the section mill including a connection configured to be coupled to a drill string.
14 . A method, comprising:
deploying a tool string downhole in a wellbore, the tool string including a casing cutting tool releasably coupled to a bridge plug; setting the bridge plug within the wellbore; releasing the casing cutting tool from the bridge plug; and in a same trip during which the bridge plug is set within the wellbore, expanding the casing cutting tool and removing an axial section of casing while maintaining the casing cutting tool centered within the casing.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the casing cutting tool is a section mill and removing the axial section of casing includes section milling the axial section of the casing.
16 . The method of claim 14 , the tool string further including a reamer, and the method further comprising:
in the same trip during which the bridge plug is set and the casing cutting tool removes the axial section of the casing, using the reamer to ream cement or formation within a portion of the wellbore where the axial section of the casing has been removed by the casing cutting tool.
17 . The method of claim 16 , the method further comprising:
after releasing the casing cutting tool from the bridge plug, moving the casing cutting tool uphole before expanding the casing cutting tool and removing the axial section of the casing.
18 . The method of claim 17 , the method further comprising:
after removing the axial section of the casing with the casing cutting tool, moving the reamer uphole before expanding the reamer and reaming the cement or formation; and after reaming the cement or formation, creating a cement plug in at least the portion of the wellbore where the reamer reamed the cement or formation.
19 . The method of claim 14 , the casing cutting tool including a perforation tool, and removing the axial section of the casing includes perforating the casing.
20 . The method of claim 14 , the tool string further including a casing cleaning device coupled to the bridge plug, the method further comprising:
before the bridge plug is set, using the casing cleaning device and removing debris from an inner wall of at least a portion of the casing where the bridge plug is set.Cited by (0)
