Claims

Abstract

A processor based system and method of generating new pattern knowledge of a sensory input is disclosed. The system comprises a memory to store abstract patterns as pattern knowledge, a sensor configured to receive a concrete pattern representing a sensory input, an adaption module configured to horizontally blended abstract patterns to create a horizontally blended abstract pattern as the new pattern knowledge if a degree of blending the abstract and concrete patterns exceeds a threshold. In some embodiments, the horizontally blended abstract pattern comprises a selective projection of parameters of two abstract patterns. In some embodiments, the systems and methods further comprise vertically blending the abstract pattern and the concrete pattern by selectively projecting parameters of an abstract pattern with the parameters of the concrete pattern.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A processor based cognitive pattern knowledge generating system for generating a new pattern knowledge for a processor based device, said system comprising:
 a memory configured to store a plurality of abstract patterns each comprising one or more abstract parameters;   a sensor configured to receive a concrete pattern representing a sensory input wherein the concrete pattern comprises one or more concrete parameters;   a perception and action module configured to receive one of the abstract patterns and the concrete pattern;   the perception and action module configured to determine a degree of blending necessary to construct a blend of the one of the abstract pattern and the concrete pattern;   the perception and action module configured to determine whether the degree of blending exceeds a threshold;   an adaption module configured to receive at least two abstract patterns and to horizontally blend the at least two abstract patterns to create a horizontally blended abstract pattern if the degree of blending exceeds the threshold; and   the memory configured to store the horizontally blended abstract pattern as a new abstract pattern for the plurality of abstract patterns wherein the new abstract pattern comprises a new pattern knowledge.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the degree of blending comprises a measure of an amount of a selective projection of the one or more abstract parameters required to match the one or more concrete parameters. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the horizontally blended abstract pattern comprises a selective projection of one or more abstract parameters of one of the at least two abstract patterns and one or more abstract parameters of the other at least two abstract patterns. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1  wherein:
 the at least two abstract patterns comprise at least two relevant abstract patterns; and 
 the horizontally blended abstract pattern comprises a selective projection of one or more abstract parameters of one of the at least two abstract patterns and one or more abstract parameters of the other at least two abstract patterns. 
 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1  wherein:
 the at least two abstract patterns comprise at least two relevant abstract patterns; 
 wherein the at least two relevant abstract patterns comprise those abstract patterns that have a highest probability match between the abstract parameters and the concrete parameters; and 
 the horizontally blended abstract pattern comprises a selective projection of one or more abstract parameters of one of the at least two abstract patterns and one or more abstract parameters of the other at least two abstract patterns. 
 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1  wherein:
 the blending comprises a vertical blending; and 
 the degree of vertical blending comprises an amount of a selective projection of the one or more abstract parameters to match the one or more concrete parameters. 
 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1  wherein:
 the blending comprises a vertical blending; 
 the vertical blending comprises selectively projecting a parameter of the abstract pattern with a parameter of the concrete pattern as a potential parameter of a vertically blended abstract pattern; and 
 the horizontally blended abstract pattern is created by selectively projecting at least one abstract parameter from the at least two abstract patterns as a parameter of the horizontally blended abstract pattern. 
 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the new pattern knowledge is used to provide an action. 
     
     
         9 . The processor based method of  claim 1  wherein exceeding the threshold of the degree of blending reflects a poor match of the at least one abstract pattern with the concrete pattern. 
     
     
         10 . A processor based method of generating a new pattern knowledge for a processor based device, said method comprising the steps of:
 receiving at least one concrete pattern representing a sensory input from an electronic sensor;   the at least one concrete pattern comprising a plurality of concrete parameters;   selecting at least two abstract patterns from a memory representing a pattern knowledge of a processor based device;   the at least two abstract patterns each comprising a plurality of abstract parameters;   the at least two abstract patterns representing a highest probability match between the abstract parameters and the concrete parameters;   receiving at least one abstract pattern comprising a pattern knowledge of a processor based device from a memory;   determining a degree of blending necessary to construct a blend of the one of the abstract pattern and the concrete pattern; and   when the degree of blending exceeds a threshold, horizontally blending at least two abstract patterns to create a horizontally blended abstract pattern as a new abstract pattern wherein the new abstract pattern is a pattern knowledge for the processor based device.   
     
     
         11 . The processor based method of  claim 10  wherein the horizontally blended abstract pattern is created by selectively projecting at least one abstract parameter from the at least two abstract patterns as a parameter of the new pattern knowledge. 
     
     
         12 . The processor based method of  claim 10  wherein the pattern knowledge is used to provide an action. 
     
     
         13 . The processor based method of  claim 10  wherein:
 blending comprises a vertical blending; 
 vertical blending comprises selectively projecting a parameter of the abstract pattern with a parameter of the concrete pattern as a parameter of the vertically blended abstract pattern; and 
 horizontally blending comprises selectively projecting at least one abstract parameter from the at least two abstract patterns as a parameter of the horizontally blended abstract pattern. 
 
     
     
         14 . The processor based method of  claim 10  wherein:
 the at least two abstract patterns comprise at least two relevant abstract patterns; 
 wherein the at least two relevant abstract patterns comprise those abstract patterns that have a highest probability match between the abstract parameters and the concrete parameters; and 
 horizontally blending comprises selectively projecting one or more abstract parameters of one of the at least two abstract patterns and one or more abstract parameters of the other at least two abstract patterns. 
 
     
     
         15 . The processor based method of  claim 10  wherein exceeding the threshold of the measure of the degree of blending reflects a poor match of the at least one abstract pattern with the concrete pattern. 
     
     
         16 . A processor based cognitive pattern knowledge generating system for generating a new pattern knowledge, said system configured to carry out a method for generating method of generating a new pattern knowledge, the method comprising:
 receiving at least one concrete pattern representing a sensory input from an electronic sensor;   the at least one concrete pattern comprising a plurality of concrete parameters;   selecting at least two abstract patterns from a memory representing a pattern knowledge of a processor based device;   the at least two abstract patterns each comprising a plurality of abstract parameters;   the at least two abstract patterns representing a highest probability match between the abstract parameters and the concrete parameters;   receiving at least one abstract pattern comprising a pattern knowledge of a processor based device from a memory;   determining a degree of blending necessary to construct a blend of the one of the abstract pattern and the concrete pattern; and   when the degree of blending exceeds a threshold, horizontally blending at least two abstract patterns to create a horizontally blended abstract pattern as a new abstract pattern wherein the new abstract pattern is a pattern knowledge for the processor based device.
