Claims

Abstract

A method of manufacturing a laminated glass article is disclosed that includes forming a laminated glass article with at least one glass cladding layer and a glass core layer adhered to the glass cladding layer. The glass core layer is amenable to crystallization and optionally has a viscosity amenable to forming by a fusion lamination method. The method further includes removing a portion of the laminated glass article such that the glass core layer is exposed on at least one edge of the laminated glass article, and crystallizing at least a portion of the exposed glass core layer. A crystallized or semi-crystallized surface of the exposed glass core layer has a lower CTE than a remainder of the glass core layer. A laminated glass article and a glass article having a crystalline or semi-crystalline surface portion that is integral with a bulk of the glass body are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A laminated glass article comprising:
 a glass core layer;   at least one glass cladding layer adhered to the glass core layer, wherein the glass core layer has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) than the glass cladding layer; and   at least one edge where the glass core layer is exposed, at least a portion of an exposed surface of the glass core layer crystallized or semi-crystallized, and the crystallized or semi-crystallized portion of the glass core layer having a lower CTE than the remainder of the glass core layer.   
     
     
         2 . The laminated glass article of  claim 1 , wherein the glass cladding layer comprises less than 1 wt % of alkali compounds or alkaline compounds. 
     
     
         3 . The laminated glass article of  claim 1 , wherein the glass core layer comprises greater than about 1 wt % of alkali compounds or alkaline compounds comprising Li, Na, or K. 
     
     
         4 . The laminated glass article of  claim 3 , wherein the glass core layer is substantially free of TiO 2  and ZrO 2 . 
     
     
         5 . The laminated glass article of  claim 1 , wherein the glass core layer has a liquidus viscosity of about 35 kPoise to about 200 kPoise and a liquidus temperature of less than or equal to about 1400° C. 
     
     
         6 . The laminated glass article of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass cladding layer has a liquidus viscosity of about 50 kPoise to about 250 kPoise and a liquidus temperature of less than or equal to about 1400° C. 
     
     
         7 . The laminated glass article of article of  claim 1 , wherein the glass core layer is substantially free of TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , and ZnO. 
     
     
         8 . The laminated glass article of  claim 1 , wherein the glass cladding layer is not substantially crystallized. 
     
     
         9 . An electronic device comprising a cover glass comprised of the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         10 . An electronic device comprising a glass backplane comprised of the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         11 . An electronic device comprising a display comprised of the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         12 . An architectural glass pane comprising the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         13 . An automotive glazing comprising the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         14 . A vehicular glass member comprising the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         15 . An appliance comprising the glass article of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         16 . A laminated glass article comprising a glass core layer and at least one glass cladding layer disposed directly adjacent to the glass core layer, the glass core layer comprising a crystallized or semi-crystallized edge portion that provides compressive stresses at or near the edge of the laminated glass article to thereby strengthen the edge of the laminated glass article. 
     
     
         17 . The laminated glass article of  claim 16 , wherein the edge portion further comprises an ion-exchanged portion. 
     
     
         18 . A glass article comprising:
 a glass body; and   a crystalline or semi-crystalline surface portion that is integral with a bulk of the glass body;   wherein an interface between the glass body and the surface portion comprises a continuous transition region;   wherein the bulk of the glass body and the surface portion are free or substantially free of TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , and ZnO; and   wherein the surface portion has a lower average coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) than the bulk of the glass body.   
     
     
         19 . The glass article of  claim 18 , wherein the surface portion comprises a lithium aluminosilicate, beta-quartz, eucryptite, or spodumene.
