Claims

Abstract

A method performed by a name server includes receiving, at the name server from a first network device, a first name associated with a second network device and for which the name server supports establishing an encrypted connection to the second network device over a network. The method further includes determining a quality of service level for the encrypted communication link based on the first name and on a user associated with the first network device, wherein the quality of service level corresponds to a priority with which the first network device is granted access to the second network device. The method further includes selecting, based on the determined quality of service level, one or more network addresses for communicating with the second network device using the encrypted connection from among a plurality of network addresses associated with the second network device, wherein the selected one or more network addresses correspond to the determined quality of service level. The method further includes sending, to the first network device, the selected one or more network addresses, wherein the first network device uses the selected one or more network addresses to communicate with the second network device over the network using the encrypted connection.

         2 . A method performed by a name server, the method comprising: receiving, at the name server from a first network device, a first name
 associated with a second network device and for which the name server supports establishing an encrypted connection to the second network device over a network;   determining, by the name server, a quality of service level for the encrypted communication link based on the first name and on a user associated with the first network device, wherein the quality of service level corresponds to a priority with which the first network device is granted access to the second network device;   selecting, by the name server based on the determined quality of service level, one or more network addresses for communicating with the second network device using the encrypted connection from among a plurality of network addresses associated with the second network device, wherein the selected one or more network addresses correspond to the determined quality of service level; and   sending, by the name server to the first network device, the selected one or more network addresses, wherein the first network device uses the selected one or more network addresses to communicate with the second network device over the network using the encrypted connection.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising determining the quality of service level based further on a subscription level of the user. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the plurality of network addresses associated with the second network device includes pseudorandom network addresses. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the selected one or more network addresses are used to authenticate communications between the first network device and the second network device to the determined quality of service level. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the encrypted connection is a secure communication link. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the encrypted connection is a communication link between the first and second network devices in a virtual private network. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the encrypted connection passes through one or more intermediate devices on the network, the intermediate devices providing anonymity of at least one of the first network device and the second network device by translating one or more addresses in packets transmitted over the encrypted connection. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the first and second network devices are mobile devices. 
     
     
         10 . A name server, comprising: a memory storing instructions; and
 one or more processors configured to execute the instructions to:
 receive, from a first network device, a first name associated with a second network device and for which the name server supports establishing an encrypted connection to the second network device over a network; 
 determine, a quality of service level for the encrypted communication link based on the first name and on a user associated with the first network device, wherein the quality of service level corresponds to a priority with which the first network device is granted access to the second network device; 
 select, based on the determined quality of service level, one or more network addresses for communicating with the second network device using the encrypted connection from among a plurality of network addresses associated with the second network device, wherein the selected one or more network addresses correspond to the determined quality of service level; and 
 send, to the first network device, the selected one or more network addresses, wherein the first network device uses the selected one or more network addresses to communicate with the second network device over the network using the encrypted connection. 
   
     
     
         11 . The name server of  claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to execute the instructions to determine the quality of service level based further on a subscription level of the user. 
     
     
         12 . The name server of  claim 10 , wherein the plurality of network addresses associated with the second network device includes pseudorandom network addresses. 
     
     
         13 . The name server of  claim 10 , wherein the selected one or more network addresses are used to authenticate communications between the first network device and the second network device to the determined quality of service level. 
     
     
         14 . The name server of  claim 10 , wherein the encrypted connection is a secure communication link. 
     
     
         15 . The name server of  claim 10 , wherein the encrypted connection is a communication link between the first and second network devices in a virtual private network.

The name server of  claim 10 , wherein the encrypted connection passes through one or more intermediate devices on the network, the intermediate devices providing anonymity of at least one of the first network device and the second network device by translating one or more addresses in packets transmitted over the encrypted connection.
