Compositions for enhancing brain activity

Abstract

A method for enhancing at least one of alertness, attention, concentration and memory in a person in need thereof, comprising administering a composition to said person, said composition comprising: a) an effective amount of an extract of Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof; b) an effective amount of mangiferin, norathyriol, or an extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol; or c) a synergistic combination of (a) and (b).

         28 . A method for enhancing at least one of alertness, attention and concentration in a person in need thereof, comprising administering to said person the composition of (a) and (b) according to  claim 41 , or a synergistic combination of (a) and (b). 
     
     
         29 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein said composition comprises said extract of Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof. 
     
     
         30 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein said extract composition comprises a hydroalcoholic extract of peel of Cyperus esculentus rhizomes. 
     
     
         31 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein said effective amount of said Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof is between 20 mg and 20 g per dose. 
     
     
         32 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein said composition comprises said effective amount of mangiferin, norathyriol, or an extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol. 
     
     
         33 . The method according to  claim 32 , wherein said effective amount of said mangiferin or said norathyriol is between 20 mg and g per dose, wherein said effective amount of said extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol is sufficient to provide between 20 mg and 5 g mangiferin or norathyriol per dose, and wherein said composition further comprises caffeine. 
     
     
         34 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein said composition comprises said synergistic combination of (a) and (b). 
     
     
         35 . The method according to  claim 33 , wherein the ratio of (a) to (b) is between about 1:1 and about 50:1. 
     
     
         36 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein said composition further comprises an active ingredient selected from the group consisting of B group vitamins, caffeine, citicoline, citrulline, choline, phosphatidylcholine, curcumin, huperzine, luteolin, ibogaine, magnesium, N-methyltyramine, omega-3 fatty acids, octopamine, phosphatidlyserine, phosphatidlyserine, quercetin, rutin, resveratrol, synephrine, taurine, taxifoline, theanine, theobromine, xanthohumol, yangonin, yohimbine, ecdysteroids (20HE) extracts of plant species of the genera Aloysia, Alpinia, Astragalus, Bacopa, Centella, Citrus, Coca, Cola, Curcuma, Coffea, Celastrus, Camellia, Eleutherococcus, Ephedra, Euterpe, Garcinia, Ginkgo, Ganoderma, Glycyrrhiza, Icarine, Ilex, Kaempferia, Ocimum, Paullinia, Panax, Pfaffia, Piper Pueraria, Rhodiola, Rhaponticum, Sida, Sideritis, Tabernanthe, Theobroma, Vitis, Withania, Zingiber, Zizyphus, and mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         37 . A method for the reduction of stress and improving mood in a person in need thereof, comprising administering a composition to said person, said composition comprising:
 a) an effective amount of an extract of Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof;   b) an effective amount of mangiferin, norathyriol, or an extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol, wherein said extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol is a mangiferin-containing extract of a plant species in a genus selected from the group consisting of Mangifera, Salacia, Cyclopia, Hypericum, Canscora, Fagraea, Gentiana, Hoppea, Swertia, Hypericum, Polygala, Zizyphus, and mixtures thereof; or   c) a synergistic combination of (a) and (b);   wherein said composition modulates alpha-2 brain wave activity in said person.   
     
     
         38 . A method for the treatment or prevention of symptoms from Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer's Disease and/or Parkinson's Disease in a person in need thereof, comprising administering to said person the composition of (a) and (b) according to  claim 41 , or a synergistic combination of (a) and (b). 
     
     
         39 . A method for maintaining the attention, alertness and concentration enhancing effect of a product comprising caffeine or theobromine, while reducing side effects of said caffeine or theobromine, said method comprising replacing all or part of the caffeine or theobromine in said product with the composition of (a) and (b) according to  claim 41 , or a synergistic mixture of (a) and (b). 
     
     
         40 . The method according to  claim 39 , wherein said method comprises replacing all or part of the caffeine or theobromine in said product with said composition, wherein each milligram of caffeine or theobromine removed from said product is replaced by:
 a) between 20 mg and 200 mg of said extract of Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof;   b) between 1 and 20 mg of mangiferin, norathyriol, or an extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol; or   c) a synergistic mixture of (a) and (b).   
     
     
         41 . A composition for enhancing at least one of alertness, attention and concentration, said composition comprising:
 a) an effective amount of an extract of Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof; and   b) an effective amount of mangiferin, norathyriol, or an extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol, wherein said extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol is a mangiferin-containing extract of a plant species in a genus selected from the group consisting of Mangifera, Salacia, Cyclopia, Hypericum, Canscora, Fagraea, Gentiana, Hoppea, Swertia, Hypericum, Polygala, Zizyphus, and mixtures thereof.   
     
     
         42 . The composition according to  claim 41 , wherein said extract of Cyperus esculentus peel, Cyperus esculentus rhizomes, or a combination thereof is an aqueous extract, an alcoholic extract, or a hydroalcoholic extract. 
     
     
         43 . The composition according to  claim 41 , wherein said composition comprises a hydroalcoholic extract of peel of Cyperus esculentus rhizomes. 
     
     
         44 . The composition according to  claim 41 , wherein said effective amount of said mangiferin, said norathyriol, or said extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol is between 20 mg and 5 g per dose. 
     
     
         45 . The composition according to  claim 41 , wherein said composition comprises said synergistic combination of (a) and (b). 
     
     
         46 . The composition according to  claim 41 , wherein said composition is an orally dissolvable or dispersible buccal strip for mucosal absorption, a chewing gum, a lozenge, an effervescent tablet, a capsule, a food, or an edible emulsion. 
     
     
         47 . A composition for enhancing at least one of alertness, attention and concentration, said composition comprising
 a) between 20 mg and 5 g per dose of mangiferin, norathyriol, or an extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol sufficient to provide between 20 mg and 5 g mangiferin or norathyriol per dose, wherein said extract comprising mangiferin or norathyriol is a mangiferin-containing extract of a plant species in a genus selected from the group consisting of Mangifera, Salacia, Cyclopia, Hypericum, Canscora, Fagraea, Gentiana, Hoppea, Swertia, Hypericum, Polygala, Zizyphus, and mixtures thereof; and   b) caffeine.
