Abstract
An application manager of a mobile device can provide a user with the ability to control whether an application can use location information provided by a location subsystem of the mobile device. The application can request to be notified by the location subsystem when the mobile device crosses a geofence. When the mobile device crosses the geofence, the location subsystem provides a notice to the application. The application manager can intercept the notice to the application, and present an alert on a user interface. The application manager can then provide the notice to the application only upon receiving an input through the user interface confirming that the application still has permission to use location information.

21 . A method comprising:
receiving, by a location subsystem of a mobile device, from an application executing on the mobile device, a request for permission to use location information related to the mobile device; causing a user interface subsystem of the mobile device to present a first dialog indicating that the application requested permission to use the location information, the first dialog including a first user interface element; receiving an indication of input being received through the first user interface element approving the request for permission to use the location information; providing, from the location subsystem, to the application, a response indicating that the application is permitted to use the location information; causing the user interface subsystem to present a second dialog indicating that the application has been using the location information, the second dialog including a second user interface element; and receiving an indication of input being received through the second user interface element to allow the application to continue using the location information.
22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the input received through the first user interface element causes the application to be permitted to use the location information while the application is in use on the mobile device.
23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the application is in use on the mobile device while a graphical user interface of the application is displayed on the mobile device.

The method of claim 21 , wherein the input received through the first user interface element causes the application to be permitted to use the location information while the application is in use on the mobile device or while the application is running in a background execution mode on the mobile device.
25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the second dialog indicates that the application has been using the location information while the application is running in the background execution mode.

The method of claim 21 , wherein the user interface subsystem presents the second dialog after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed since the response indicating that the application is permitted to use the location information has been provided, and the predetermined amount of time is in the order of several days.
27 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the input received through the first user interface element causes the application to be activated.
28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein activating the application comprises launching the application or changing an execution mode of the application from a background execution mode to a foreground execution mode.
29 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the second dialog includes a description of a purpose for which the application is using the location information.
30 . A system comprising:
one or more processors; and memory coupled to the one or more processors and configured to store instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
receiving, by a location subsystem of a mobile device, from an application executing on the mobile device, a request for permission to use location information related to the mobile device;
causing a user interface subsystem of the mobile device to present a first dialog indicating that the application requested permission to use the location information, the first dialog including a first user interface element;
receiving an indication of input being received through the first user interface element approving the request for permission to use the location information;
providing, from the location subsystem, to the application, a response indicating that the application is permitted to use the location information;
causing the user interface subsystem to present a second dialog indicating that the application has been using the location information, the second dialog including a second user interface element; and
receiving an indication of input being received through the second user interface element to allow the application to continue using the location information.
31 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the input received through the first user interface element causes the application to be permitted to use the location information while the application is in use on the mobile device.
32 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the application is in use on the mobile device while a graphical user interface of the application is displayed on the mobile device.

The system of claim 30 , wherein the input received through the first user interface element causes the application to be permitted to use the location information while the application is in use on the mobile device or while the application is running in a background execution mode on the mobile device.
34 . The system of claim 33 , wherein the second dialog indicates that the application has been using the location information while the application is running in the background execution mode.
35 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the user interface subsystem presents the second dialog after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed since the response indicating that the application is permitted to use the location information has been provided, and the predetermined amount of time is in the order of several days.
36 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the input received through the first user interface element causes the application to be activated.

39 . A non-transitory storage device storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
receiving, by a location subsystem of a mobile device, from an application executing on the mobile device, a request for permission to use location information related to the mobile device; causing a user interface subsystem of the mobile device to present a first dialog indicating that the application requested permission to use the location information, the first dialog including a first user interface element; receiving an indication of input being received through the first user interface element approving the request for permission to use the location information; providing, from the location subsystem, to the application, a response indicating that the application is permitted to use the location information; causing the user interface subsystem to present a second dialog indicating that the application has been using the location information, the second dialog including a second user interface element; and receiving an indication of input being received through the second user interface element to allow the application to continue using the location information.
