Contextualizing knowledge panels

Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus for receiving a request that includes an entity identifier of an entity that is referenced by a search query submitted by a user and one or more context terms that are referenced by the search query; identifying a plurality of knowledge elements that are related to the entity; identifying one or more context terms that are associated with the entity that is referenced by the search query; assigning, rank scores to the plurality of knowledge elements, based at least on identifying the one or more context terms that are associated with the entity that is referenced by the search query; selecting one or more of the knowledge elements from among the knowledge elements based at least on the rank scores assigned to the knowledge elements; and providing, in response to the request, information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A computer implemented method comprising:
 receiving a request that includes (i) an entity identifier of an entity that is referenced by a search query submitted by a user, and (ii) one or more context terms that are included in the search query that is submitted by the user;   determining to provide a search results page including a knowledge panel responsive to the request;   in response to the determination to provide the search results page including the knowledge panel:
 generating the knowledge panel including knowledge elements that are related to the entity referenced by the search query and one or more context terms included in the search query and that are selected to be presented in the knowledge panel, the generation of the knowledge panel comprising:
 selecting one or more knowledge elements from a plurality of knowledge elements that are related to the entity referenced by the search query and the one or more context terms that are included in the search query submitted by the user; and 
 for each of the selected knowledge elements:
 identifying one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms included in the search query within text associated with the selected knowledge elements; and 
 emphasizing the one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms of the text associated with the selected knowledge elements using a visual element; and 
 
 
   providing, in response to the request, the knowledge panel including the selected knowledge elements in the search results page, wherein one or more identified occurrences of the one or more context terms within the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element within the knowledge panel presented with the search results page.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein emphasizing the one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms with the visual element comprises one or more of highlighting the context terms, bounding boxes surrounding the one or more occurrences, and altering the font of the context terms to be bold or italic font. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the one or more context terms comprise a query term substring of a word occurring within the selected knowledge elements. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein one or more occurrences of synonyms of the one or more context terms within the text associated with the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein one or more occurrences of joined compound words or fuzzy matched words related to the search query within the text associated with the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein providing information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements comprises:
 providing data that causes information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements to be presented in a knowledge panel, the knowledge panel being presented with a search results page associated with the search query.   
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein providing data that causes information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements to be presented in the knowledge panel comprises:
 determining, based on identifying the one or more context terms that are associated with the entity that is referenced by the search query, a position of the knowledge panel, wherein the determined position defines a position of the knowledge panel being presented with the search results page associated with the search query; and   providing, in response to the request, data that causes the knowledge panel to be presented with the search results page such that the position of the knowledge panel presented with the search results page corresponds to the determined position.   
     
     
         8 . A system comprising:
 one or more computers and more or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:   receiving a request that includes (i) an entity identifier of an entity that is referenced by a search query submitted by a user, and (ii) one or more context terms that are included in the search query that is submitted by the user;   determining to provide a search results page including a knowledge panel responsive to the request;   in response to the determination to provide the search results page including the knowledge panel:
 generating the knowledge panel including knowledge elements that are related to the entity referenced by the search query and one or more context terms included in the search query and that are selected to be presented in the knowledge panel, the generation of the knowledge panel comprising:
 selecting one or more knowledge elements from a plurality of knowledge elements that are related to the entity referenced by the search query and the one or more context terms that are included in the search query submitted by the user; and 
 for each of the selected knowledge elements:
 identifying one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms included in the search query within text associated with the selected knowledge elements; and 
 emphasizing the one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms of the text associated with the selected knowledge elements using a visual element; and 
 
 
   providing, in response to the request, the knowledge panel including the selected knowledge elements in the search results page, wherein one or more identified occurrences of the one or more context terms within the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element within the knowledge panel presented with the search results page.   
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 8 , wherein emphasizing the one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms with the visual element comprises one or more of highlighting the context terms, bounding boxes surrounding the one or more occurrences, and altering the font of the context terms to be bold or italic font. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the one or more context terms comprise a query term substring of a word occurring within the selected knowledge elements. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein one or more occurrences of synonyms of the one or more context terms within the text associated with the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein one or more occurrences of joined compound words or fuzzy matched words related to the search query within the text associated with the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element. 
     
     
         13 . A computer-readable storage device encoded with a computer program, the program comprising instructions that, if executed by one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
 receiving a request that includes (i) an entity identifier of an entity that is referenced by a search query submitted by a user, and (ii) one or more context terms that are included in the search query that is submitted by the user;   determining to provide a search results page including a knowledge panel responsive to the request;   in response to the determination to provide the search results page including the knowledge panel:
 generating the knowledge panel including knowledge elements that are related to the entity referenced by the search query and one or more context terms included in the search query and that are selected to be presented in the knowledge panel, the generation of the knowledge panel comprising:
 selecting one or more knowledge elements from a plurality of knowledge elements that are related to the entity referenced by the search query and the one or more context terms that are included in the search query submitted by the user; and 
 for each of the selected knowledge elements:
 identifying one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms included in the search query within text associated with the selected knowledge elements; and 
 emphasizing the one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms of the text associated with the selected knowledge elements using a visual element; and 
 
 
   providing, in response to the request, the knowledge panel including the selected knowledge elements in the search results page, wherein one or more identified occurrences of the one or more context terms within the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element within the knowledge panel presented with the search results page.   
     
     
         14 . The computer-readable device of  claim 13 , wherein emphasizing the one or more occurrences of the one or more context terms with the visual element comprises one or more of highlighting the context terms, bounding boxes surrounding the one or more occurrences, and altering the font of the context terms to be bold or italic font. 
     
     
         15 . The computer-readable device of  claim 14 , wherein the one or more context terms comprise a query term substring of a word occurring within the selected knowledge elements. 
     
     
         16 . The computer-readable device of  claim 14 , wherein one or more occurrences of synonyms of the one or more context terms within the text associated with the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element. 
     
     
         17 . The computer-readable device of  claim 14 , wherein one or more occurrences of joined compound words or fuzzy matched words related to the search query within the text associated with the selected knowledge elements are emphasized using the visual element. 
     
     
         18 . The computer-readable device of  claim 13 , wherein providing information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements comprises:
 providing data that causes information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements to be presented in a knowledge panel, the knowledge panel being presented with a search results page associated with the search query.   
     
     
         19 . The computer-readable device of  claim 18 , wherein providing data that causes information associated with the entity and the one or more selected knowledge elements to be presented in the knowledge panel comprises:
 determining, based on identifying the one or more context terms that are associated with the entity that is referenced by the search query, a position of the knowledge panel, wherein the determined position defines a position of the knowledge panel being presented with the search results page associated with the search query; and   providing, in response to the request, data that causes the knowledge panel to be presented with the search results page such that the position of the knowledge panel presented with the search results page corresponds to the determined position.
