Abstract

In certain aspects, the present invention provides compositions and methods for increasing red blood cell and/or hemoglobin levels in vertebrates, including rodents and primates, and particularly in humans.

         21 . A method of identifying an agent that increases red blood cell levels, the method comprising:
 a) identifying a test agent that binds to a ligand-binding domain of an ActRII polypeptide competitively with an ActRII ligand; and   b) evaluating the effect of the agent on red blood cell levels in an animal.   
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the agent is selected from the group consisting of non-peptidyl organic molecules, peptides, polypeptides, peptidomimetics, sugars, hormones, and nucleic acid molecules. 
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the agent is identified by a biochemical method. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the agent is identified by a mechanism based assay. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the agent is evaluated in a cell based assay. 
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the agent is evaluated in an in vivo assay. 
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the agent is evaluated in an in vitro assay. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the ActRII polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2. 
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the ActRII polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 3. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the ActRII polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 7.
