Abstract
Wrapped paperboard packaging is described. In one independent aspect, a packaging structure, such as, for example, an edge protector, a corner board, etc., may generally include a first ply having a first width, a second ply having a second width wider than the first width, and a third ply having a third width wider than the second width. The second ply is wrapped around ends of the first ply, and the third ply is wrapped around the first ply and the second ply. The third ply overlaps at a portion (e.g., an intermediate portion, an apex, etc.) of the packaging structure.

1 . A packaging structure comprising:
a first ply having a first width; a second ply having a second width, the second width being greater than the first width; and a third ply having a third width, the third width being greater than the second width, the third ply being wrapped around the first ply and the second ply, the third ply overlapping at a portion of the packaging structure.
2 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , wherein the third ply overlaps proximate a center of a total width of the packaging structure.
3 . The packaging structure of claim 2 , wherein the total width of the packaging structure is approximately equal to the first width.
4 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , wherein the second ply is at least partially wrapped around the first ply.
5 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , wherein the packaging structure is formed as a corner protector, the third ply overlapping proximate an apex of the corner protector.
6 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , further comprising a fourth ply having a fourth width, the fourth width being less than the first width.
7 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , further comprising another first ply to provide a plurality of first plies, the third ply being wrapped around the plurality of first plies and the second ply. cm 8 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , further comprising another second ply to provide a plurality of second plies, the third ply being wrapped around the first ply and the plurality of second plies.
9 . The packaging structure of claim 8 , wherein the first-mentioned second ply and the other second ply are staggered along the third width of the third ply.
10 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , further comprising another third ply to provide a plurality of third plies, the plurality of third plies being wrapped around the first ply and the second ply.
11 . The packaging structure of claim 1 , further comprising:
another first ply to provide a plurality of first plies; and another second ply to provide a plurality of second plies; wherein the plurality of third plies are wrapped around the plurality of first plies and the plurality of second plies; and wherein the plurality of second plies are at least partially wrapped around the plurality of first plies.
12 . A method of manufacturing a packaging structure, the packaging structure including a first ply having a first width, a second ply having a second width, the second width being greater than the first width, a third ply having a third width, the third width being greater than the second width, the method comprising:
adhering the first ply, the second ply, and the third ply; wrapping the third ply around the first ply and the second ply to form a flat paperboard structure of approximately the first width with opposite ends of the third ply overlapping at a portion of the flat paperboard structure; and bending the flat paperboard structure to form the packaging structure.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein adhering includes applying a layer of adhesive on at least two of the first ply, the second ply, and the third ply.
14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the packaging structure further includes a fourth ply having a fourth width, the fourth width being less than the first width, wherein wrapping includes wrapping the third ply around the first ply, the second ply, and the fourth ply to form a flat paperboard structure.
15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein bending includes bending the flat paperboard structure into a v-shaped packing structure.
16 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising, after bending, cutting the packaging structure to a predetermined length.
17 . A method of manufacturing a packaging structure, the method comprising:
determining a type of packaging structure to be manufactured; determining an available supply of paperboard layers; determining a stackup of paperboard layers based on a predetermined caliper of the packaging structure; providing at least one first ply having a first width, at least one second ply having a second width, and at least one third ply having a third width, the second width being greater than the first width, the third width being greater than the second width; and forming the packaging structure using the at least one first ply, the at least one second ply, and the at least one third ply.
18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein forming includes wrapping the at least one third ply around the at least one first ply and the at least one second ply with opposite ends of the at least one third ply overlapping.
19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein forming includes, after wrapping, bending a paperboard structure including the at least one first ply, the at least one second ply, and the at least one third ply into a v-shape.
