Abstract

A therapeutic and exercise device includes a frame; a hand crank coupled to the frame which is rotatably movable by a user, the hand crank coupled to a vertically oriented rail such that the hand crank is adjustable in a vertical plane fore and aft relative to a support surface for the therapeutic and exercise device; a foot crank coupled to the frame which is rotatably movable by the user, the foot crank coupled to a horizontally oriented rail such that the foot crank is adjustable in a horizontal plane; and a brake coupled to the frame and to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank, the brake configured to selectively apply a braking force to said at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank to resist rotational movement of the at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank.

         21 . A therapeutic and exercise device, comprising:
 a frame;   a hand crank coupled to the frame for rotational movement by a user, the hand crank coupled to a vertically oriented rail such that the hand crank is adjustable in a vertical plane fore and aft relative to a support surface for the therapeutic and exercise device;   a foot crank coupled to the frame for rotational movement by a user, the foot crank coupled to a horizontally oriented rail such that the foot crank is adjustable in a horizontal plane; and   a brake coupled to the frame and to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank, the brake configured to selectively apply a braking force to said at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank to resist rotational movement of the at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank.   
     
     
         22 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 21 , wherein the brake is configured to apply a variable amount of braking force to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank. 
     
     
         23 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 21 , wherein the brake is an eddy current brake. 
     
     
         24 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 21 , further comprising:
 a first assistive device configured to provide an assistive force to aid movement of the foot crank along the horizontally oriented rail.   
     
     
         25 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 21 , further comprising:
 a second assistive device configured to provide an assistive force to aid movement of the hand crank along the vertically oriented rail.   
     
     
         26 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 21 , wherein the hand crank is rotatably coupled to the foot crank such that the hand crank and the foot crank rotate at a substantially similar rotational velocity. 
     
     
         27 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 21 , further comprising a control system configured to control operation of the brake. 
     
     
         28 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 27 , wherein the control system includes at least one program that, when executed, controls the brake to selectively increase and decrease the braking force applied to the hand crank or the foot crank. 
     
     
         29 . A therapeutic and exercise device, comprising:
 a frame;   a hand crank coupled to the frame for rotational movement by a user;   a foot crank coupled to the frame for rotational movement by the user; and   a brake coupled to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank, the brake configured to selectively apply a braking force to said at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank to resist movement of the at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank.   
     
     
         30 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 28 , wherein the brake is configured to apply a variable amount of braking force to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank. 
     
     
         31 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 28 , further comprising a control system configured to control operation of the brake. 
     
     
         32 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 30 , wherein the control system includes at least one program that, when executed, controls the brake to selectively increase and decrease the braking force applied to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank. 
     
     
         33 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 28 , wherein the brake is an eddy current brake. 
     
     
         34 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 28 , further comprising a belt that couples the brake to each of the foot crank and the hand crank. 
     
     
         35 . A therapeutic and exercise device, comprising:
 a frame;   a hand crank coupled to the frame for rotational movement by a user;   a foot crank coupled to the frame for rotational movement by a user; and   a brake selectively coupled to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank, the brake configured to selectively apply a braking force to said at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank to resist rotational movement of the at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank.   
     
     
         36 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 35 , wherein the brake is configured to apply a variable amount of braking force to at least one of the hand crank or the foot crank. 
     
     
         37 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 36 , wherein the brake is an eddy current brake. 
     
     
         38 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 35 , wherein the brake is configured to apply a variable amount of braking force to both of the hand crank and the foot crank. 
     
     
         39 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 38 , wherein the brake is an eddy current brake. 
     
     
         40 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 35 , further comprising a control system coupled to the frame and configured to control operation of the brake. 
     
     
         41 . The therapeutic and exercise device of  claim 39 , wherein the control system includes at least one program that, when executed, controls the brake to selectively increase and decrease the braking force applied to both of the hand crank or the foot crank.
