Abstract

A mechanism for automatically registering Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices to an end-user account of an Internet-based resource, using a gateway that the end-user previously registered to the account. Various security alternatives are described that help avoid masquerading and other attacks on the home network of the end-user.

. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the first device is operable as a Wi-Fi access point.

. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the first device is operable as a Wi-Fi station.

. The method according to claim 25 , comprising forming a Wi-Fi network between the first device and the second device based on at least a service set identifier (SSID) of the first device.

. The method according to claim 25 , comprising sending Wi-Fi credentials from the first device to the second device; and joining, by the second device, a Wi-Fi network based on the Wi-Fi credentials.

. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the wireless network comprises a Zigbee network.

. The method according to claim 33 , wherein the first device is operable as a hub for second device.

. The method according to claim 25 , wherein the first device is configured to communicate on a Zigbee network and a Wi-Fi network.

. The method according to claim 25 , wherein powering the second device comprises powering the second device, during an initial set up of the second device, in proximity to the first device.

. A system, comprising:
a first device operatively connected, via the Internet, to a remote system, wherein the first device communicates with the remote system that associates the first device and a user account; and a second device that is powered on, during an initial set up, in proximity to the first device, wherein the first device automatically detects the second device, wherein a wireless network is formed between the second device and the first device, and wherein the second device communicates with the remote system via the first device to associate the second device with the user account.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein the remote system maintains the association between the first device, the second device, and the user account.

. The system according to claim 37 , where in the wireless network comprises a Wi-Fi network or a Zigbee network.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein the first device is operable as a Wi-Fi access point.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein the first device is operable as a Wi-Fi station.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein a Wi-Fi network is formed between the first device and the second device based on at least a service set identifier (SSID) of the first device.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein the second device receives, via the first device, Wi-Fi credentials, and wherein the second device joins a Wi-Fi network based on the Wi-Fi credentials.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein the first device is operable as a hub for the second device.

. The system according to claim 37 , wherein the first device is configured to communicate on a Zigbee network and a Wi-Fi network.

. A system, comprising:
a remote system; and a first device operatively connected, via the Internet, to the remote system, wherein the first device communicates with the remote system, wherein the remote system associates the first device and a user account, wherein the first device automatically detects a second device that has been powered on in proximity to the first device, wherein a wireless network is automatically formed between the first device and the second device, and wherein the first device communicates with the remote system to associate the second device with the user account.
