Abstract

A composition containing medium-chain fatty acids or salts or mono-, di-, triglycerides, esters or amide derivatives of medium-chain fatty acids in an optimized ratio is for use as a feed additive for animals. An animal feed, supplemented with the composition containing the medium-chain fatty acids or derivatives, can be fed to animals.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A feed additive comprising medium-chain fatty acids or salts, mono, di-, triglycerides, esters or amides thereof, the additive comprising caproic acid (C6), caprylic acid (C8), capric acid (C10) and lauric acid (C12), wherein:
   0.6<(C8/C10)<2.0; C8/C12>1.0; (C8+C10+C12)/(C6+C8+C10+C12)>0.8; (C8+C10)/(C6+C8+C10+C12)>0.5; and 2.5<(C8+C10)/(C6+C12)<90.

2 . The feed additive according to claim 1 wherein the concentration of the medium-chain fatty acids or salts, mono, di-, triglycerides, esters or amides thereof amounts to at least 20% by weight of said feed additive.

3 . The feed additive according to claim 1 , wherein the concentration of the medium-chain fatty acids or salts, mono, di-, triglycerides, esters or amides thereof amounts to at least 50% by weight of said feed additive.

4 . The feed additive according claim 1 , further comprising vitamins, trace elements or carboxylic acids and/or salts thereof, selected from the group of valeric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, butyric acid, citric acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, benzoic acid, succinic acid, sorbic acid, tartaric acid.

5 . Method for inhibiting the growth of bacteria and/or the reduction of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract of animals, comprising administering said feed additive of claim 1 to said animal.

         6 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein said bacteria are Gram-positive and/or Gram-negative bacteria.

7 . The method according to claim 6 , wherein the bacteria are selected from the group of Clostridium sp., Escherichia sp., Staphylococcus sp. or Streptococcus sp.

8 . A method for feeding animals comprising administering a feed comprising a feed additive according to claim 1 .

9 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the animals are poultry, pigs or ruminants.
