Claims

Abstract

Described herein are methods for the bromine-facilitated synthesis of fluoro-sulfur compounds, that include SF 4 , SF 5 Cl, SF 5 Br and SF 6 . The methods described herein generally require lower temperature and pressure, produce higher yields, require less time, do not use corrosive or costly reactants and solvents that are commonly used in the synthesis of the fluoro-sulfur compounds, and do not produce deleterious waste products when compared to previously-used methods.

         26 . A method of producing SF 4  comprising: admixing a sulfur reactant, KF, and Br 2 , wherein: the sulfur reactant, the KF and the Br 2  react at temperatures from about −10° C. to about 400° C.; the reaction provides a yield of SF 4  from about 10% to less than 100%; and the sulfur reactant, the KF, and the Br 2  react to produce the SF 4  without adding reaction solvents to the admixture. 
     
     
         27 . A method according to  claim 26 , wherein the sulfur reactant is S, S 2 Cl 2 , SCl 2 , S 2 Br 2 , SBr 2 , or a combination thereof.
