Abstract

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The PEMFC includes a catalyst support material formed of a metal material reactive with H 3 O + , HF and/or SO − to form reaction products in which the metal material accounts for a stable molar percentage of the reaction products. The PEMFC further includes a catalyst supported on the catalyst support material.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A catalyst support material for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), the catalyst support material comprising:
 a metal material reactive with H 3 O + , HF and/or SO 3   −  to form reaction products in which the metal material accounts for a stable molar percentage of the reaction products.   
     
     
         2 . The catalyst support material of  claim 1 , wherein the stable molar percentage is greater than or equal to 80 percent. 
     
     
         3 . The catalyst support material of  claim 1 , wherein the metal material is a ternary metal oxide material. 
     
     
         4 . The catalyst support material of  claim 3 , wherein the ternary metal oxide material is at least partially oxidized forms of SnMo 4 O 6 , TiNb 3 O 6  or mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         5 . The catalyst support material of  claim 3 , wherein the ternary metal oxide material is an at least partially oxidized form of SnWO 4 . 
     
     
         6 . The catalyst support material of  claim 1 , wherein the metal material is a ternary metal carbide material. 
     
     
         7 . The catalyst support material of  claim 6 , wherein the ternary metal carbide material is Nb 2 SnC, Ti 2 GeC, Ti 3 SnC 2 , Ti 3 GeC 2  or mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         8 . A catalyst support material for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), the catalyst support material comprising:
 an intermetallic compound including first and second metals forming first and second metal oxides, respectively, the first metal oxide reactive with H 2 O + , HF and/or SO 3   −  to form reaction products in which the metal oxide accounts for a stable molar percentage of the reaction products.   
     
     
         9 . The catalyst support material of  claim 8 , wherein the stable molar percentage is greater than or equal to 80 percent. 
     
     
         10 . The catalyst support material of  claim 8 , wherein the intermetallic compound further includes a third metal forming a third metal oxide. 
     
     
         11 . The catalyst support material of  claim 10 , wherein the intermetallic compound is NbMo 2 W, TaMo 2 W, TiMo 2 W, Ti 2 NbSn or mixtures thereof. 
     
     
         12 . The catalyst support material of  claim 11 , wherein the intermetallic compound is NbMo 2 W and the first, second and third metal oxides are at least partially oxidized forms of Nb 2 O 5 , MoO 3  and WO 3 . 
     
     
         13 . The catalyst support material of  claim 11 , wherein the intermetallic compound is TaMo 2 W and the first, second and third metal oxides are at least partially oxidized forms of Ta 2 O 5 , MoO 3  and WO 3 . 
     
     
         14 . The catalyst support material of  claim 11 , wherein the intermetallic compound is TiMo 2 W and the first, second and third metal oxides are at least partially oxidized forms of TiO 2 , MoO 3  and WO 3 . 
     
     
         15 . A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) comprising:
 a catalyst support material formed of a metal material reactive with H 3 O + , HF and/or SO 3   −  to form reaction products in which the metal material accounts for a stable molar percentage of the reaction products; and   a catalyst supported on the catalyst support material.   
     
     
         16 . The PEMFC of  claim 15 , wherein the catalyst includes one or more decomposed species aid in electron transport through the PEMFC. 
     
     
         17 . The PEMFC of  claim 16 , wherein the one or more decomposed species forming a solid-electrolyte interface (SEI). 
     
     
         18 . The PEMFC of  claim 15 , wherein the stable molar percentage is greater than or equal to 80 percent. 
     
     
         19 . The PEMFC of  claim 15 , wherein the metal material is a ternary metal oxide material. 
     
     
         20 . The PEMFC of  claim 15 , wherein the metal material is a ternary metal carbide material.
