Abstract

Lactobacillus-based probiotic compositions for inclusion in microbial-based products. In one instance, the microbial-based product takes the form of an animal feed additive. When used as a feed additive for animals, especially ruminants, and in particular cattle, the following benefits from the composition are noted: (i) improved milk yield in dairy cattle, (ii) improved milk composition in dairy cattle, (iii) increased weight gain-to-feed intake ratio in beef cattle (feed efficiency), and (vi) improved average daily weight gain. Another marked benefit of the compositions when used as an animal feed additive is inhibition of pathogenic growth including E. coli, Salmonella, Clostridium, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.

Claims

1 . A method of manufacturing live bacterial cells comprising:
inoculating a bacterial fermentation medium with live Lactobacillus cells strain M35 having ATCC Accession Number PTA-5249; and harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells in the logarithmic phase of growth in which the Lactobacillus cells are substantially spherically shaped.

2 . The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
inoculating a bacterial fermentation medium with live Propionibacterium cells; and harvesting the live Propionibacterium cells.

3 . The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the Propionibacterium cells are one of Propionibacterium freudenreichiim cells and Propionibacterium acidipropionici cells.

4 . The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells during at least one logarithmic phase of growth.

5 . The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells at least partially during at least one of (i) mid-log phase of growth and (ii) late-log phase of growth.

6 . The method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells during mid-log phase of growth.

7 . The method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells during late-log phase of growth.

8 . The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells between mid-log phase of growth and late-log phase of growth.

9 . The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells at least partially during mid-log phase of growth and at least partially during another log phase of growth.

10 . The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells when the live cells are spherically shaped.

11 . A method of manufacturing live bacterial cells comprising:
inoculating a bacterial fermentation medium with live Lactobacillus cells strain M35 having ATCC Accession Number PTA-5249 and having a homology of 99.79% to L. amylovorus ; and harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells in the logarithmic phase of growth in which the Lactobacillus cells are substantially spherically shaped.

12 . The method as recited in claim 11 , further comprising:
inoculating a bacterial fermentation medium with live Propionibacterium cells; and harvesting the live Propionibacterium cells.

13 . The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the Propionibacterium cells are one of Propionibacterium freudenreichiim cells and Propionibacterium acidipropionici cells.

14 . The method as recited in claim 11 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells during at least one logarithmic phase of growth.

15 . The method as recited in claim 11 , further comprising:
harvesting the live Lactobacillus cells at least partially during at least one of (i) mid-log phase of growth and (ii) late-log phase of growth.
