Abstract

A system and computer implemented method which determines usage and available rate plans, at least some of which are pool eligible. Based on expected usage for a billing cycle, the system and method modifies rate plans for one or more devices to migrate devices in and out of the pool(s) and/or modify plans and data available to the pool in order to reduce cost of telecommunications services for the devices.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A system for monitoring telecommunication device usage and modifying telecommunications rate plans comprising:
 a computer having software executing thereon which monitors usage of a plurality of devices using telecommunications resources and said software detects presence of at least a first one of the plurality of devices at an international location;   said software determining a first telecommunications rate plan for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices and comparing that telecommunications rate plan to the international location to determine one or more telecommunications rate plans based on the international location;   said software selecting one of the one or more telecommunications rate plans which is an international roaming plan for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices at a telecommunications provider server in order to reduce telecommunications cost based on the detected presence at the international location.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and cancels the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and said software determines a historical usage profile for that device and based on the historical usage profile said software cancels the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and said software determines a historical usage profile for that device and based on the historical usage profile said software does not cancel the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1  wherein the selecting one of the one or more telecommunications rate plans is made retroactive to a beginning of a billing cycle. 
     
     
         6 . A system for monitoring telecommunication device usage and modifying telecommunications rate plans comprising:
 a computer having software executing thereon which monitors usage of a plurality of devices using telecommunications resources and said software detects expected presence of at least a first one of the plurality of devices at an international location;   said software determining a first telecommunications rate plan for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices and comparing that telecommunications rate plan to the international location to determine one or more telecommunications rate plans based on the international location;   said software selecting one of the plurality of telecommunications rate plans which is an international roaming plan for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in order to reduce telecommunications cost.   
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 6  wherein the expected presence is based on a travel booking associated with a user of the at least a first one of the plurality of devices. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 6  wherein the software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and cancels the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 6  wherein the software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and said software determines a historical usage profile for that device and based on the historical usage profile said software cancels the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 6  wherein the software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and said software determines a historical usage profile for that device and based on the historical usage profile said software does not cancel the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 6  wherein the selecting one of the one or more telecommunications rate plans is made retroactive to a beginning of a billing cycle. 
     
     
         12 . A system for monitoring telecommunication device usage and modifying telecommunications rate plans comprising:
 a computer having software executing thereon which monitors usage of a plurality of devices using telecommunications resources and said software detects presence of at least a first one of the plurality of devices at an international location;   said software determining a first telecommunications rate plan for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices and comparing that telecommunications rate plan to the international location to determine if an international roaming plan should be added for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in order to reduce anticipated telecommunications cost based on the international location;   if said international roaming plan should be added, said software adding the international roaming plan for the at least the first one of the plurality of devices at a telecommunications provider server.   
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 12  wherein determination if the international roaming plan should be added is further based on historical usage of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 13  wherein the historical usage of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices is based on historical usage at the international location. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 13  wherein the international roaming plan is added and said software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and cancels the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 13  wherein the international roaming plan is added and said software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and said software determines a historical usage profile for that device and based on the historical usage profile said software cancels the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 13  wherein the international roaming plan is added and said software further detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device and said software determines a historical usage profile for that device and based on the historical usage profile said software does not cancel the international roaming plan. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 13  wherein the international roaming plan is added and said software further determines an end date for said international roaming plan based on a travel booking associated with a user of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices. 
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 17  wherein the international roaming plan is canceled based on the end date. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 18  wherein the software cancels the international roaming plan once the software detects presence of the at least the first one of the plurality of devices in a home country of that device. 
     
     
         21 . The system of  claim 12  wherein the adding the international roaming plan is made retroactive to a beginning of a billing cycle.
