Container-Based Application Data Protection Method and System
Abstract
A computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications includes initiating a backup process for a containerized application comprising an application template, application information, and application data. An application template associated with the application is saved to a first repository. Application information is identified and saved to a second repository. A persistent volume containing the application data is identified and at least some of the application data from the persistent volume is saved to a third repository. The application is then restored based on the saved template, application information and application data.

1 . A computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications, the method comprising:
a) initiating a backup process for a containerized application comprising an application template, application information, and application data; b) saving the application template to a first repository; c) identifying the application information and saving the identified application information to a second repository; and d) identifying a persistent volume containing the application data and moving at least some of the application data from the persistent volume to a third repository.
2 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 , the method further comprising:
a) initiating a restore process for the containerized application comprising the application template, application information, and application data; b) retrieving the application template from the first repository; c) executing the application template to generate a skeleton application and then shutting down the application skeleton; d) retrieving the identified application information from the second repository; e) retrieving the at least some of the application data from the third repository; and f) rebooting the application skeleton to restore the containerized application.
3 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein at least some of the application data comprises a full backup portion of the application data.
4 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein at least some of the application data comprises an incremental portion of the application data.
5 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the first, second, and third repository are the same repository.
6 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the first, second and third repository are different repositories.
7 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein at least two of the first, second and third repository are the same repositories.
8 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the application template comprises a Helm chart.
9 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the application information comprises at least one of a common resource descriptor (CRD), an IP address, a network configuration, a virtual machine, a number of virtual machines, an operating system, and a software version number.
10 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the repository comprises a S3 repository.
11 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the application data comprises a NFS format.
12 . The computer-implemented method of data protection for containerized applications of claim 1 wherein the containerized application comprises a containerized application running on a hybrid cloud.
13 . A computer-implemented method for generating a backup of a containerized application, the method comprising:
a) storing an application template comprising an operating system and a network identifier associated with the containerized application to a template file; b) discovering configuration metadata comprising versioning information associated with the application template; c) storing the discovered configuration metadata to a metadata file; d) discovering a stateful set of services associated with the application template; e) discovering stateful information associated with the discovered stateful set of services in a persistent volume; and f) copying the stateful information associated with the discovered stateful set of services in the persistent volume to a repository.
14 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein the application template comprises a Helm chart.
15 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein the application template further comprises a number of virtual machines (VMs).
16 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein the application template further comprises a storage identifier.
17 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein the application template further comprises an IP address.
18 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein the application template further comprises a network topology.
19 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein discovering configuration metadata associated with the application template comprises performing a discovery process on a cloud-based infrastructure.
20 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 wherein copying the stateful information from the persistent volume to the repository comprises creating a snapshot of the persistent volume.
21 . The computer-implemented method for generating the backup of the containerized application of claim 13 further comprising:
a) restoring the application template from the template file;
b) running the restored application template to generate an application skeleton and subsequently shutting down the application skeleton;
c) restoring the configuration metadata associated with the application template;
d) restoring to a persistent volume the stateful information associated with the discovered stateful set of services; and
e) rebooting the application skeleton to restore the containerized application.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
