Claims

Abstract

A fire-retardant and antimicrobial rayon fiber includes a preservative, e.g., zinc pyrithione, as an antimicrobial agent. The present invention is further directed to a yarn that includes the fire-retardant and antimicrobial rayon fiber. The yarn may be a sheath-and-core yarn where the fire-retardant and antimicrobial rayon fiber is incorporated into the sheath, and the core is formed from fiberglass or any other suitable material. The present invention is further directed to a fabric formed from the fire-retardant and antimicrobial rayon fiber, such as a nonwoven fabric, a knit fabric, or a woven fabric. Moreover, the present invention is further directed to an article such as one or more layers of a mattress or bedding formed from the fire-retardant and antimicrobial rayon fiber.

What is claimed: 
     
         1 . A fire-retardant and antimicrobial fiber, the fiber comprising: rayon; a fire retardant; and zinc pyrithione. 
     
     
         2 . A fiber as defined in  claim 1 , wherein the fire retardant is amorphous silicon dioxide. 
     
     
         3 . A fiber as defined in  claim 1 , wherein the zinc pyrithione is present in an amount ranging from about 0.04 wt. % to about 1 wt. %. 
     
     
         4 . A fiber as defined in  claim 3 , wherein the zinc pyrithione is present in an amount of about 0.1 wt. %. 
     
     
         5 . A fiber as defined in  claim 1 , wherein the fiber further comprises magnesium. 
     
     
         6 . A yarn comprising the fiber as defined in  claim 1 . 
     
     
         7 . A yarn as defined in  claim 6 , wherein yarn is a sheath-core yarn comprising a sheath fiber layer surrounding a core layer, further wherein the fiber is incorporated into the sheath layer. 
     
     
         8 . A fabric comprising the fiber as defined in  claim 1 . 
     
     
         9 . A fabric as defined in  claim 8 , wherein the fabric is a nonwoven fabric, a knit fabric, or a woven fabric. 
     
     
         10 . A mattress comprising at least one textile layer, wherein the at least one textile layer comprises the fiber as defined in  claim 1 .
