Abstract

A document annotation system receives a document in an original format including content. The system converts the document to an intermediate format including page data elements representing pagination within the document. The system converts the intermediate format to a display format including data marker elements linking a portion of the content to a pin cite based on the page data elements. The system detects annotations to the display format and generates citations based on the annotations.

Claims

What is claimed is:

         1 . A method comprising:
receiving, from a client application by a document annotation system, a first document in an original format; generating, by the document annotation system and based at least in part on the first document, a second document corresponding to the first document, the second document in a second format; transmitting, to the client application or a second client application, the second document, wherein the client application or the second client application is configured to display the second document in a user interface (UI); receiving, from the client application or the second client application, an indication of a citation in the second document, the citation associated with text in the second document selected by a user of the client application or the second client application; and storing, by the document annotation system, the indication of the citation in association with the first document and the second document.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
generating, by the documentation annotation system, an annotation instruction based at least in part on the indication of the citation, wherein the annotation instruction enables the client application or the second client application to display the citation on the second document on the UI.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
sending, by the document annotation system, the annotation instruction to the client application or the second client application, wherein the client application or the second client application displays the second document in the UI with the citation.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein generating the annotation instruction further comprises:
determining one or more pin cites associated with the citation.

5 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
transmitting, to a third client application, the second document and the annotation instruction; receiving, from the third client application, a second indication of a second citation in the second document; and generating, by the documentation annotation system, a second annotation instruction based at least in part on the indication of the second citation.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
determining one or more facts based at least in part on the citation.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:
generating, by the documentation annotation system and based at least in part on the one or more facts, timeline view UI instructions that, when executed by the first client application or second client application, renders a timeline view UI comprising an indication of a number of the one or more facts.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the table view UI further comprises an evidence column including a citation relating a portion of at least one document of the second plurality of documents to the individual filtered fact of the plurality of filtered facts.

         9 . A system comprising:
one or more processors; one or more computer readable media storing computer executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors perform operations comprising: receiving, from a client application, a first document in an original format; generating, based at least in part on the first document, a second document corresponding to the first document, the second document in a second format; transmitting, to the client application or a second client application, the second document, wherein the client application or the second client application is configured to display the second document in a user interface (UI); receiving, from the client application or the second client application, an indication of a citation in the second document, the citation associated with text in the second document selected by a user of the client application or the second client application; and storing the indication of the citation in association with the first document and the second document.

10 . The system of claim 9 , the operations further comprising:
generating an annotation instruction based at least in part on the indication of the citation, wherein the annotation instruction enables the client application or the second client application to display the citation on the second document on the UI.

11 . The system of claim 10 , the operations further comprising:
sending the annotation instruction to the client application or the second client application, wherein the client application or the second client application displays the second document in the UI with the citation.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein generating the annotation instruction further comprises:
determining one or more pin cites associated with the citation.

13 . The system of claim 10 , the operations further comprising:
transmitting, to a third client application, the second document and the annotation instruction; receiving, from the third client application, a second indication of a second citation in the second document; and generating, by the documentation annotation system, a second annotation instruction based at least in part on the indication of the second citation.

14 . The system of claim 9 , the operations further comprising:
determining one or more facts based at least in part on the citation.

15 . The system of claim 14 , the operations further comprising:
generating, by the documentation annotation system and based at least in part on the one or more facts, timeline view UI instructions that, when executed by the first client application or second client application, renders a timeline view UI comprising an indication of a number of the one or more facts.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the table view UI further comprises an evidence column including a citation relating a portion of at least one document of the second plurality of documents to the individual filtered fact of the plurality of filtered facts.

17 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions executable by a processor, wherein the instructions, when executed perform operations comprising:
receiving, from a client application, a first document in an original format; generating, based at least in part on the first document, a second document corresponding to the first document, the second document in a second format; transmitting, to the client application or a second client application, the second document, wherein the client application or the second client application is configured to display the second document in a user interface (UI); receiving, from the client application or the second client application, an indication of a citation in the second document, the citation associated with text in the second document selected by a user of the client application or the second client application; and storing the indication of the citation in association with the first document and the second document.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , the operations further comprising:
generating an annotation instruction based at least in part on the indication of the citation, wherein the annotation instruction enables the client application or the second client application to display the citation on the second document on the UI.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , the operations further comprising:
sending the annotation instruction to the client application or the second client application, wherein the client application or the second client application displays the second document in the UI with the citation

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , the operations further comprising:
transmitting, to a third client application, the second document and the annotation instruction; receiving, from the third client application, a second indication of a second citation in the second document; and generating, by the documentation annotation system, a second annotation instruction based at least in part on the indication of the second citation.
