Abstract
In accordance with some embodiments, classification of input/output requests from a database to a storage system may be performed. Each input/output request may be associated with a database class, and each database class may be mapped to a quality of service policy. Thus, quality of service may be enforced such that different data blocks within the storage system of the database may be afforded appropriate quality of service.

21 . At least one machine accessible storage medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions when executed on a machine, cause the machine to:
identify a request, generated by a computing system, for data from a database; identify a set of attributes of the request; determine that a particular one of a plurality of performance classes is to be associated with the request based on the set of attributes of the request; append a tag to the request, wherein the tag identifies the particular class and the particular class corresponds to one or more performance policies specifying performance characteristics to be applied to servicing of the request; and transmit the request together with the appended tag on a communication channel for servicing by the database system, wherein the request includes the appended tag and the tag is to be read by the database system to determine a service level to apply to the request according to the one or more performance policies.
22 . The storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the set of attributes comprises a type of a system used to implement the database.
23 . The storage medium of claim 22 , wherein the type of system comprises a server pool.
24 . The storage medium of claim 22 , wherein the performance policy is to apply to the type of system.
25 . The storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the request comprises an I/O request.
26 . The storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the computing system comprises a first computing system, the request is received from the first system, and the request with appended tag is to be sent to another system implementing the database system.
27 . The storage medium of claim 26 , wherein the request is to be received by a database manager and is sent by the database manager to the database system.
28 . A method comprising:
identify a request, generated by a computing system, for data from a database; identifying a set of attributes of the request; determining that a particular one of a plurality of performance classes is to be associated with the request based on the set of attributes of the request; appending a tag to the request, wherein the tag identifies the particular class and the particular class corresponds to one or more performance policies specifying performance characteristics to be applied to servicing of the request; and transmitting the request together with the appended tag on a communication channel for servicing by the database system, wherein the request includes the appended tag and the tag is to be read by the database system to determine a service level to apply to the request according to the one or more performance policies.
29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the set of attributes comprises a type of a system used to implement the database.
30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the type of system comprises a server pool.
31 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the performance policy is to apply to the type of system.
32 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the request comprises an I/O request.
33 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the computing system comprises a first computing system, the request is received from the first system, and the request with appended tag is to be sent to another system implementing the database system.
34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the request is to be received by a database manager and is sent by the database manager to the database system.
35 . A system comprising:
a data processor; a data manager executable by the data processor to:
identify a request, generated by a computing system, for data from a database;
identify a set of attributes of the request;
determine that a particular one of a plurality of performance classes is to be associated with the request based on the set of attributes of the request;
append a tag to the request, wherein the tag identifies the particular class and the particular class corresponds to one or more performance policies specifying performance characteristics to be applied to servicing of the request; and
transmit the request together with the appended tag on a communication channel for servicing by the database system, wherein the request includes the appended tag and the tag is to be read by the database system to determine a service level to apply to the request according to the one or more performance policies.
36 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the set of attributes comprises a type of a system used to implement the database.
37 . The method of claim 36 , wherein the type of system comprises a server pool.
38 . The method of claim 36 , wherein the performance policy is to apply to the type of system.
39 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the request comprises an I/O request.
