Catheter tray, packaging system, instruction insert, and associated methods

Abstract

A tray (100) for accommodating a coiled medical device, such as a catheter assembly (700), includes a first compartment (101), a second compartment (102), and a third compartment (103). The catheter assembly (700) and devices associated with a catheterization procedure, such as syringes (701,702) containing sterile water and lubricating jelly and a specimen container (703) can be disposed within the tray. Printed instructions (1001) can be included with the tray (100). One or more layers of wrap material (2200) can be folded about the tray (100) to enclose the tray (100) and other items, such as an additional layer of wrap material (2701), packaged liquid hand sanitizer (2401), and packaged gloves (2402). When a health care services provider (3101) unfolds the wrap material, the same can be used to create a sterile field beneath a patient (3201).

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A medical procedure kit, comprising:
 a single layer tray comprising a first compartment and a second compartment;   a first syringe and a second syringe each disposed within the single layer tray;   a Foley catheter coupled to a fluid drain bag via a coiled tubing, the Foley catheter disposed within the second compartment such that the fluid drain bag is between a base member of the single layer tray and the Foley catheter; and   the first compartment defining a lubricating jelly application chamber to lubricate at least a portion of the Foley catheter.   
     
     
         2 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 1 , wherein the first syringe is disposed within the first compartment. 
     
     
         3 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 1 , wherein the second syringe is at least partially above the Foley catheter disposed in the second compartment. 
     
     
         4 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 1 , wherein the first syringe contains lubricating jelly. 
     
     
         5 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 4 , wherein the second syringe comprises sterile water. 
     
     
         6 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 4 , further comprising printed instructions for using the single layer tray. 
     
     
         7 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 6 , wherein the printed instructions provide instructions for dispensation of the lubricating jelly in the first compartment, the printed instructions being any one of printed, placed upon, or molded into the single layer tray. 
     
     
         8 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 6 , wherein the printed instructions provide instructions for application of the lubricating jelly to the at least the portion of the Foley catheter using the lubricating jelly application chamber. 
     
     
         9 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 1 , further comprising one or more swabsticks disposed within the single layer tray. 
     
     
         10 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 9 , further comprising a specimen container disposed within the single layer tray. 
     
     
         11 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 10 , wherein:
 the single layer tray comprises a third compartment; and   one or both of the one or more swabsticks and the specimen container are disposed within the third compartment.   
     
     
         12 . A medical procedure kit, comprising:
 a single layer tray comprising a compartment and a lubricating jelly application chamber, the single layer tray defining a top opening;   a container of lubricating jelly disposed within the single layer tray; and   a coiled tubing coupled between a Foley catheter and a fluid drain bag, the coiled tubing being outside of the fluid drain bag, wherein the coiled tubing, the fluid drain bag, and the Foley catheter are disposed within the compartment with at least a portion of the Foley catheter being above the fluid drain bag and being accessible from the top opening of the single layer tray;   wherein the lubricating jelly application chamber is configured to receive at least the portion of the Foley catheter to lubricate the portion of the Foley catheter with the lubricating jelly.   
     
     
         13 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 12 , further comprising one or more swabsticks disposed within the single layer tray. 
     
     
         14 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 12 , further comprising a syringe containing water, the syringe disposed within the single layer tray, and the syringe is at least partially above the Foley catheter disposed in the compartment. 
     
     
         15 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 12 , wherein the compartment and the lubricating jelly application chamber are separated by a wall, the wall defining an opening through which the portion of the Foley catheter can be passed to lubricate the portion of the Foley catheter with the lubricating jelly. 
     
     
         16 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 12 , wherein the container of lubricating jelly includes a syringe containing the lubricating jelly. 
     
     
         17 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 16 , wherein the syringe is disposed within the lubricating jelly application chamber. 
     
     
         18 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 17 , further comprising:
 a second syringe disposed within the single layer tray.   
     
     
         19 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 18 , wherein the second syringe is disposed within the compartment. 
     
     
         20 . The medical procedure kit of  claim 18 , wherein the lubricating jelly application chamber includes one or more contours for accommodating flanges of at least one of the syringe or the second syringe.
