Abstract

A system for gasification of a material includes a plasma generator interfaced to a reaction chamber. A feedstock such as pulverized coal is fed into a plasma jet created by the plasma generator and is gasified by the high temperatures of the plasma jet. The gas produced is then collected, filtered, and utilized, for example, in generating of electricity. Likewise, extra heat produced by the system is also used to generate electricity or other heating purposes

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of converting a material to a gas, the method comprising:
 generating a plasma into a reaction chamber, the plasma from a plasma gun;   converting the material into the gas by introducing the material directly into the plasma; and   collecting the gas from the reaction chamber.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising injecting of oxygen into the plasma. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the material is particulate coal. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 cooling the reaction chamber by circulating a liquid through cooling coils, the cooling coils interfaced to the reaction chamber.   
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , further comprising:
 after the liquid exits the cooling coils, introducing the liquid directly into the plasma.
