Abstract

An apparatus and method to aid in providing a bore through a solvent trap that is both vertical and aligned with the centerline of the solvent trap. The apparatus includes a base, cap, and drill bushing. The base includes an exterior and a first central opening that forms an interior. The first central opening is configured to receive at least a portion of a solvent trap. The cap is configured to be secured to a portion of the solvent trap and includes the drill bushing positioned within a second central opening of the cap. The drill bushing includes a third central opening configured to align a drill bit along a centerline of the solvent trap. The third central opening may be configured to permit passage of various sizes of firearm rounds.

What is claimed is:

         1 . An apparatus comprising:
a solvent trap; a base having an exterior and a first central opening that forms an interior, a first end of the solvent trap being positioned within the central opening; a cap connected to a second end of the solvent trap, the cap having a second central opening, wherein the second central opening is configured to align a drill bit along a centerline of the solvent trap.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a drill bushing positioned within the second central opening, the drill bushing having a third central opening and wherein the drill bushing is configured to align a drill bit along the centerline of the solvent trap.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the exterior of the base is circular.

4 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the exterior of the base includes a first flat portion and a second flat portion opposite of the first flat portion.

5 . The apparatus of claim 4 , comprising first threads on the interior of the base.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first end of the solvent trap is threaded into the base.

7 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the solvent trap comprises a plurality of baffles connected together, wherein the first end of the solvent trap comprises a baffle, and wherein the first end of the solvent trap is threaded into the base.

8 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the cap comprises a first upper portion and a second lower portion, the first upper portion having a first perimeter and the second lower portion having a second perimeter that is smaller than the first perimeter.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the first perimeter includes a plurality of flat sections and wherein the second perimeter is circular and comprises second threads on the second perimeter.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the cap is threaded into the second end of the solvent trap.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the drill bushing comprises a head and a projection that extends from the head, the head having a larger perimeter than the projection and the third central opening extends through the head and the projection.

12 . The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a set screw, wherein the cap includes a bore configured to receive the set screw and wherein the set screw retains the drill bushing within the second central opening within the cap.

13 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the set screw may be rotated to enable the drill bushing to be removed from the second central opening within the cap.

         14 . A method comprising:
positioning a first end of a solvent trap in an interior of a base, the base having an exterior and a first central opening that forms the interior and having internal threads; and connecting a cap to a second end of the solvent trap, the cap having a second central opening, the cap having external threads, wherein a drill bushing is positioned within the second central opening, the drill bushing has a third central opening that aligns a drill bit along a centerline of the solvent trap.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising drilling a bore into an inner portion of the solvent trap via the drill bushing.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the cap is configured to accept differing sizes of drill bushings to enable different sizes of a bore to be drilled into the inner portion of the solvent trap.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the exterior of the base is circular.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the exterior of the base has a first flat portion and a second flat portion opposite of the first flat portion.

19 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising providing a bore within the cap and providing a set screw, wherein the set screw may be inserted into the bore to retain the drill bushing within the second central opening of the cap.

20 . An apparatus for modifying baffles comprising:
a base having an exterior, a first central opening that forms an interior, the first central opening configured to receive a baffle, and an aperture through a side of the base; a drill bushing having a central opening, the drill bushing being positioned within the aperture through the side of the base; and wherein a drill bit may be inserted into the aperture through the side of the base to clip a central opening of a baffle.
