Shippable Foldable Bed Foundation

Abstract

A shippable and foldable bed foundation for supporting a bed mattress. The bed foundation includes a base including a first frame having a bottom and a top, a second frame having a bottom and a top, and a connector pivotally connecting the second frame to the first frame. The first frame and the second frame are selectively pivotal with respect to one another about a pivot axis, such that the first frame and the second frame are selectively pivotal with respect to one another between an open unfolded position wherein the tops of the first frame and the second frame are generally coplanar and are adapted to support the bed mattress and a closed folded position wherein the base is folded and the top of the second frame overlies the top of the first frame.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A bed foundation for supporting a bed mattress, the bed foundation comprising:
 a base including a first frame having a bottom and a top, a second frame having a bottom and a top, and a connector pivotally connecting the second frame to the first frame, the first frame and the second frame being selectively pivotal with respect to one another about a pivot axis,   whereby the first frame and the second frame are selectively pivotal with respect to one another between an open unfolded folded position wherein the tops of the first frame and the second frame are generally coplanar and are adapted to support the bed mattress and a closed folded position wherein the base is folded and the top of the second frame overlies the top of the first frame.   
     
     
         2 . The bed foundation of  claim 1 , wherein the connector comprises a hinge, the hinge pivotally connecting the first frame to the second frame. 
     
     
         3 . The bed foundation of  claim 2 , wherein the hinge comprises a first leaf coupled to the first frame, a second leaf coupled to the second frame, and a pin pivotally coupling the second leaf to the first leaf for pivotal movement about the pivot axis. 
     
     
         4 . The bed foundation of  claim 1 , wherein the first frame includes an elongate inner support member and an elongate outer support member, the outer support member being spaced apart from and generally parallel to the inner support member. 
     
     
         5 . The bed foundation of  claim 4 , wherein the second frame includes an elongate inner support member and an elongate outer support member, the outer support member of the second frame being spaced apart from and generally parallel to the inner support member of the second frame, the inner support member of the second frame being located generally adjacent to the inner support member of the first frame and the outer support member of the second frame being spaced apart from the outer support member of the first frame, with the inner support members of the first and second frames being located between the outer support member of the first frame and the outer support member of the second frame, when the first and second frames are in the open unfolded position. 
     
     
         6 . The bed foundation of  claim 4 , wherein the inner support member and the outer support member of the first frame each include a bottom slat, a top slat, and one or more posts extending between the bottom slat and the top slat. 
     
     
         7 . The bed foundation of  claim 6 , wherein the first frame includes an inner filler strip extending along the top slat of the inner support member of the first frame and an outer filler strip extending along the top slat of the outer support frame of the first frame. 
     
     
         8 . The bed foundation of  claim 7 , wherein the first frame includes a plurality of cross slats that extend between the inner filler strip and the outer filler strip of the first frame, the cross slats and the inner and outer filler strips having top surfaces adapted to support the bed mattress when the first frame and the second frame are in the open unfolded position. 
     
     
         9 . The bed foundation of  claim 4 , wherein the first frame includes one or more elongate center support members located between the inner support member and the outer support member of the first frame, and a plurality of cross slats extending transversely to and supported by the inner support member, outer support member, and one or more center support members. 
     
     
         10 . The bed foundation of  claim 1 , including a cover located on the base. 
     
     
         11 . The bed foundation of  claim 10 , wherein the first frame and second frame each include a top, a first end, a second end, and an outer side, and the cover includes a first end panel that extends along the outer side of the first frame, a second end panel that extends along the outer side of the second frame, a first side panel that extends along the first end of the first frame, a second side panel that extends along the first end of the second frame, a third side panel that extends along the second end of the first frame, and a fourth side panel that extends along the second end of the second frame. 
     
     
         12 . The bed foundation of  claim 11 , wherein the cover includes a top panel that extends over the tops of the first frame and second frame, a first bottom panel that extends over a bottom of the first frame, and a second bottom panel that extends over a bottom of the second frame, the top panel adapted to be folded over onto itself when the first frame and the second frame are in the closed folded position. 
     
     
         13 . The bed foundation of  claim 11 , including a corner cover having a flexible sheet, the flexible sheet including a first surface and a second surface that extend between a first edge and a second edge of the flexible sheet, and an elongate strip that extends along the first surface of the flexible sheet and spaced apart from the second edge of the flexible sheet, the elongate strip is connected to the inner support member of the first frame such that an inner edge of the first side panel of the cover and a portion of the flexible sheet adjacent the second side edge of the flexible sheet are located between the elongate strip and the inner support member of the first frame, the flexible sheet being wrapped around the elongate strip with the portion of the flexible sheet adjacent the first side edge of the flexible sheet being connected to a side of the inner support member. 
     
     
         14 . The bed foundation of  claim 13 , wherein the inner support member includes a corner post, the elongate strip of the corner connector being connected to an end of the corner post and the flexible sheet extends along and is connected to a side of the corner post. 
     
     
         15 . The bed foundation of  claim 1 , wherein the first frame and the second frame each have a width parallel to the pivot axis of about 59.5 inches and a length transverse to the pivot axis of about 39.5 inches. 
     
     
         16 . The bed foundation of  claim 1 , wherein the first frame and the second frame each have a width parallel to the pivot axis of about 29.75 inches and a length transverse to the pivot axis of about 39.5 inches. 
     
     
         17 . The bed foundation of  claim 1 , wherein the first frame and the second frame each have a width parallel to the pivot axis of about 37.5 inches and a length transverse to the pivot axis of about 39.5 inches. 
     
     
         18 . A bed support for supporting a bed mattress, the bed support comprising a first bed foundation and a second bed foundation, each bed foundation including a base having a first frame and a second frame pivotally coupled to the first frame for pivotal movement of the first frame and the second frame with respect to one another about a pivot axis, whereby the first frame and the second frame are selectively pivotal with respect to one another between an open unfolded folded position wherein respective tops of the first frame and the second frame are generally coplanar and are adapted to support the bed mattress and a closed folded position wherein the base is folded and the top of the second frame overlies the top of the first frame, the first bed foundation and the second bed foundation adapted to be located side-by-side when in the open unfolded position to support the bed mattress. 
     
     
         19 . The bed support of  claim 18 , wherein the pivot axis of the base of the first bed foundation is adapted to be coaxially aligned with the pivot axis of the base of the second bed foundation when the first and second bed foundations are in the open unfolded position for supporting a bed mattress.
