Abstract

A process for producing isomerized olefins, branched aldehydes, branched alcohols and branched surfactants through isomerization, hydroformylation, hydrogenation and surfactant forming reactions.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
We claim:

1 . A process, comprising the steps of:
providing CO and H2; providing a first catalyst which is an organometallic complex of rhodium and one type of an organophosphorus ligand or an organometallic complex of rhodium and more than one type of an organophosphorus ligand; providing an alpha olefin; isomerizing said alpha olefin by said first catalyst in the presence of CO and H2 at a first pressure to produce an isomerized olefin; and hydroformylating said isomerized olefin by said first catalyst in the presence of CO and H2 at a second pressure different from said first pressure to produce a branched aldehyde; and hydrogenating said branched aldehyde to produce a branched alcohol.

2 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said isomerizing step produces a reaction product comprising 20 wt. % or greater isomerized olefins.

3 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said hydroformylating step produces a reaction product comprising 25 wt. % or greater branched aldehydes.

4 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said hydroformylating step produces a reaction product comprising 50 wt% or greater branched aldehydes.

5 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said hydrogenation step produces a reaction product comprising 40 wt. % or greater branched alcohols.

6 . A process, comprising the steps of:
providing CO and H2; providing a first catalyst which is an organometallic complex of rhodium and one type of an organophosphorus ligand or an organometallic complex of rhodium and more than one type of an organophosphorus ligand; providing an alpha olefin; isomerizing said alpha olefin by said first catalyst in the presence of CO and H2 at a first pressure to produce an isomerized olefin; hydroformylating said isomerized olefin by said first catalyst in the presence of CO and H2 at a second pressure different from said first pressure to produce a branched aldehyde; hydrogenating said branched aldehyde to produce a branched alcohol; and producing a branched surfactant from said branched alcohol.

7 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said producing step comprises sulfating the branched alcohol to produce a branched alcohol sulfate surfactant.

8 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said producing step comprises alkoxylating the branched alcohol to produce a branched alkoxylated alcohol surfactant.

9 . The process of claim 6 , further comprising the step of using an alkoxylating agent comprising at least one ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide and mixtures of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and butylene oxide.

10 . The process of claim 8 , wherein said alkoxylated alcohol is sulfated to produce a branched sulfated alkoxylated alcohol surfactant.

11 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said isomerizing step produces a reaction product comprising 25 wt. % or greater internal olefins.

12 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said hydroformylating step produces a reaction product comprising 25 wt. % or greater branched aldehydes.

13 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said hydrogenating step produces a reaction product comprising 40 wt. % or greater branched alcohols.

14 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said hydrogenating step produces a reaction product comprising 50 wt. % or greater branched alcohols.

15 . The process of claim 6 , wherein said surfactant comprises 40 wt. % or greater branched surfactants.

16 . A branched surfactant produced by a process, comprising the steps of:
isomerizing a C4-C36 alpha olefin by a first catalyst having a rhodium metal and an organophosphorous ligand in the presence of a gas phase having CO at a first pressure producing an isomerized olefin; hydroformylating said isomerized olefin by said first catalyst in the presence of a gas having CO and H2 at second pressure different from said first pressure producing a C5-C37 branched aldehyde; hydrogenating said C5-C37 branched aldehyde to produce a C5-C37 branched alcohol; and producing a branched surfactant from said branched C5-C37 branched alcohol.
