Gasket with a pliable resilient body with a perimeter having characteristics different than the body

Abstract

A single piece gasket is disclosed having a skeletal member, typically metallic, and a pliable body. The pliable body includes a first portion having a first firmness and a second perimeter portion have a firmer consistency. When such a composite body is placed under compression, the perimeter will tend to limit the flow of the softer inner material past the firmer perimeter region or portion of the gasket. In this manner, creep or overrun of the less firm portion material will be reduced.

1 . A gasket for use under compression between a first aircraft part having a substantially planer face and a perimeter and a second aircraft part having a face substantially parallel to the planer face of the first aircraft part, the gasket comprising:
 an elastomeric, flexible, polymer body having first, tubular inner portion and a second perimeter portion, contiguous with the first portion, the second portion dimensioned to follow and at least in part extend beyond the perimeter of the first aircraft part; and   a flexible skeleton at least partly engaging the first portion of the polymer body;   wherein the first portion of the body has a pair of spaced apart, substantially parallel outer surfaces and an uncompressed inner portion thickness and wherein the second portion has an uncompressed second portion thickness that is greater than the inner portion thickness, and an uncompressed second portion cross sectional shape.   
     
     
         2 . The gasket of  claim 1  wherein the second portion cross sectional shape is rectangular. 
     
     
         3 . The gasket of  claim 1  wherein the second portion cross sectional shape is plano-convex. 
     
     
         4 . The gasket of  claim 1  wherein the second portion cross sectional shape is toothed. 
     
     
         5 . The gasket of  claim 1  wherein the second portion cross sectional shape is partially concave. 
     
     
         6 . The gasket of  claim 1  wherein the second portion cross sectional shape is partially wedge like.
