Abstract
A method of creating a clad metal part is provided. The method includes explosion bonding a plate comprised of a base layer and an interlayer. The explosion bonded plate is then cut into bars which are roll bonded with a clad layer. Ultimately a part is fabricated from the roll bonded bar. The solution enables parts to have material combinations and resulting physical properties more optimal for an application than a single bonding process.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A metal transition part comprising:
a combination of a clad layer, an interlayer and a base layer, said part having a part width, a part thickness and a part length; said part being formed by a method comprising:
explosively forming a plate having said interlayer metallurgically bonded to said base layer, said plate having a plate width greater than said part width and a plate length greater than said part length;
cutting a bar from said plate, said bar having a width less than said plate width and a length greater than said part length;
rolling said clad layer onto said bar to create a metallurgical bond between said interlayer and said clad layer; and,
fabricating said part from said metallurgically bonded clad layer, said base layer and said interlayer.
2 . The part according to claim 1 , wherein said interlayer is made from titanium.
3 . The part according to claim 1 , wherein said base layer is made from steel.
4 . The part according to claim 1 , wherein said clad layer is comprised of aluminum with a purity less than 99%.
5 . The part according to claim 1 , wherein said clad layer is comprised of an aluminum having a strength greater than 200 MPa.
6 . The part according to claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises heat treating said clad layer after said rolling.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
