Infant carrier transport

Abstract

Infant carriers are stably supported and transported by being positioned on a frame set on wheels. The frame may include an infant carrier holder with a floor with a ramp and sidewalls. The infant carrier holder may be integral with the frame or may be mounted to a mounting device that can be adjusted for mounting angle or height. A handle is provided to the frame at a position that is suitable for a person in a wheelchair to grasp the frame and move the transport. A handle suitable for a standing person to grasp the frame may optionally be provided. The transport permits a person that may have difficulty carrying or transporting an infant carrier to more easily transport the infant carrier in a standing or a seated position, the latter as may be the case with a wheelchair occupant. The transport may be fastened to the wheelchair.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An infant carrier transport for transporting a variety of types of rigid handheld motor vehicle infant carriers with a handle configured for secure engagement in the motor vehicle, comprising:
 a body for supporting the infant carrier;   an infant carrier holder located on the body; the infant carrier holder including one or more restricting members for stably supporting the infant carrier; wherein the infant carrier holder accepts the variety of types of infant carriers; and   a continuously open area bordered laterally by a pair of wheels and being open vertically from the wheels to at least a half a height of the body, and extending a depth into the body such that at least a portion of the infant carrier holder is over and above the open area, wherein the open area is configured to permit placement of a user' s legs when the user is seated in a wheelchair adjacent the infant carrier transport.   
     
     
         2 . The transport according to  claim 1 , further comprising a mounting surface coupled to the body and arranged to extend in an upward direction, and the infant carrier holder coupled to the mounting surface. 
     
     
         3 . The transport according to  claim 1 , wherein the infant carrier holder is coupled to the body. 
     
     
         4 . The transport according to  claim 1 , wherein the infant carrier holder is integral with the body. 
     
     
         5 . The transport according to  claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of wheel assemblies connected to and supporting the body for movement, wherein one or more of the wheel assemblies being configured with a brake configured to be locked and released. 
     
     
         6 . The transport according to  claim 1 , wherein the continuously open area is located at the rear of the body. 
     
     
         7 . The transport according to  claim 1 , wherein the restricting members including a lower support member for stably supporting the infant carrier at a desired angle for reclining and lateral support members for limiting lateral movement of the infant carrier. 
     
     
         8 . The transport according to  claim 1 , wherein the infant carrier holder supports the infant carrier in a position such that an infant carried in the infant carrier faces the rear. 
     
     
         9 . The transport according to  claim 1 , wherein the infant carrier holder acts as a mechanical interface between the body and the infant carrier. 
     
     
         10 . An infant carrier transport for transporting a variety of types of rigid handheld motor vehicle infant carriers having a handle configured for secure engagement in the motor vehicle, comprising:
 a body for supporting the infant carrier;   a plurality of wheels connected to and supporting the body for movement;   an infant carrier holder including support elements, the infant carrier holder located on the body for stably supporting the infant carrier on the support elements, wherein the infant carrier holder accepts the variety of types of infant carriers;   a platform, attached to at least two wheels of the plurality of wheels, disposed below the infant carrier holder located in the front of the body; and   a continuously open area extending upward from the platform to the infant carrier holder; wherein the platform is configured to stably support items placed thereon.   
     
     
         11 . The transport according to  claim 10 , wherein the platform is attached to at least the front wheels of the plurality of wheels. 
     
     
         12 . The transport according to  claim 10 , wherein the platform is configured to be a storage space. 
     
     
         13 . The transport according to  claim 10 , wherein the infant carrier holder acts as a mechanical interface between the body and the infant carrier. 
     
     
         14 . The transport according to  claim 10 , wherein the infant carrier holder is integral with the body. 
     
     
         15 . The transport according to  claim 12 , wherein the storage space is a shelf. 
     
     
         16 . The transport according to  claim 12 , wherein the storage space is a platform. 
     
     
         17 . An infant carrier transport for transporting a variety of types of rigid handheld motor vehicle infant carriers having a handle configured for secure engagement in the motor vehicle, comprising:
 a body for supporting the infant carrier;   a plurality of wheels connected to and supporting the body for movement;   an infant carrier holder comprising a plurality of restricting members for limiting movement of the infant carrier; wherein the infant carrier holder accepts the variety of types of infant carriers;   a platform, attached to at least two wheels of the plurality of wheels, disposed below the infant carrier holder located in the front of the body; and   a continuously open area extending upward from the platform to the infant carrier holder; wherein the platform is configured to stably support items placed thereon.   
     
     
         18 . The transport according to  claim 17 , wherein the plurality of restricting members including a lower support member for stably supporting the infant carrier at a desired angle for reclining and lateral support members for limiting lateral movement of the infant carrier. 
     
     
         19 . The transport according to  claim 17 , wherein the infant carrier holder is integral with the body. 
     
     
         20 . The transport according to  claim 17 , wherein the infant carrier holder acts as a mechanical interface between the body and the infant carrier.
