Abstract

This disclosure describes, in part, systems and techniques for providing digital receipts that may include itemized, interactive, and/or modifiable information about a transaction, such as a purchase transaction between a customer and a merchant. In various examples, a resource locator may be associated with transaction data and/or payment data. Furthermore, the resource locator may be associated with a storage location at which the transaction data and/or the payment data may be stored. In various implementations, the resource locator may enable access retrieval of data stored in the storage location to facilitate provision of an itemized digital receipt. Additionally, or alternatively, the resource locator may enable access retrieval of data stored in the storage location to facilitate provision of a response to an item-level information request.

Claims

What is claimed is:

         1 . A method for generating an itemized digital receipt for a transaction between a merchant and a customer, the method comprising:
 receiving, at a merchant device, input associated with items to be purchased via the transaction, the merchant device executing an instance of a merchant application installed for configuring the merchant device as a point-of-sale (POS) terminal to transmit data to a payment processing service; generating, by the merchant application, transaction data associated with the items; receiving, at the merchant application and from a payment reader associated with the merchant device, payment data associated with a payment instrument used to satisfy a cost of the transaction; sending, by the merchant application, the payment data and the transaction data to a server device associated with the payment processing service; generating, by the server device, a unique resource locator (URL) to be associated with the payment data, the transaction data, and the merchant device, wherein the URL is stored by the server device and enables access retrieval of the payment data and the transaction data; storing, by the server device, the payment data and the transaction data in a storage location, the storage location associated with the URL; sending, from the server device and to a payment service provider associated with the payment instrument, an authorization request to authorize the payment instrument for a cost of the transaction, the URL being embedded as metadata in the authorization request; receiving, by the server device, an access request for information associated with the transaction, the access request being associated with the URL; accessing, by the server device and based on the URL, the transaction data from the storage location; generating, by the server device and based on the transaction data, an itemized digital receipt identifying each item that the customer purchased via the transaction; and sending, from the server device and to a customer device operated by the customer, the itemized digital receipt operable to enable the customer to interact with individual items in the itemized digital receipt via a user interface associated with the customer device.

         2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
 accessing item-level information associated with each item that the customer purchased via the transaction, the item-level information including at least one of an item name, a price, or a picture of a respective item; and generating the itemized digital receipt based at least in part on the item-level information.

         3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the itemized digital receipt enables the customer to interact with the itemized digital receipt to provide at least one of feedback, loyalty information, or a gratuity.

         4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the itemized digital receipt enables the customer to interact with the itemized digital receipt to dispute a charge.

         5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment instrument is issued by the payment processing service.

         6 . A system comprising:
 one or more servers comprising:
 one or more first processors; and
 one or more first non-transitory computer-readable media storing first instructions executable by the one or more first processors, wherein the first instructions program the one or more first processors to:
 receive, from a merchant application associated with a point-of-sale (POS) device of a merchant, a first authorization request to authorize a payment instrument for a cost of a transaction between the merchant and a customer;
 store, in a storage location associated with a resource locator, at least transaction data associated with the transaction;
 access, based at least in part on the resource locator, the transaction data from the storage location;
 generate an itemized digital receipt based at least in part on the transaction data; and
 send at least a portion of the itemized digital receipt to a device operated by the customer.

         7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the first instructions program the one or more first processors to receive an access request for information associated with the transaction, the access request being associated with the resource locator.

         8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the first instructions further program the one or more first processors to send a second authorization request to a payment service provider associated with the payment instrument, the second authorization request including the resource locator.

         9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the access request is received from the payment service provider.

         10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the resource locator is embedded as metadata in the second authorization request.

         11 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the first instructions program the one or more first processors to at least one of:
 generate the itemized digital receipt responsive to receiving the access request; or send at least the portion of the itemized digital receipt to the device responsive to receiving the access request.

         12 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein:
 the transaction is associated with one or more items; and the transaction data includes at least one of a name of an item of the one or more items, a modification associated with the item, a price of the item, or a picture of the item.

         13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein, to generate the itemized digital receipt, the first instructions program the one or more first processors to generate a computer-readable specification that includes one or more of:
 merchant data associated with the merchant; location data associated with the transaction; the cost of the transaction; or a portion of the transaction data associated with each item of the one or more items.

         14 . The system of claim 6 , further comprising:
 the POS device, comprising:
 one or more second processors; and
 one or more second non-transitory computer-readable media storing second instructions associated with the merchant application, wherein the second instructions are executable by the one or more second processors and the second instructions program the one or more second processors to:
 receive input associated with one or more items to be purchased via the transaction;
 generate transaction data associated with the one or more items;
 receive, from a payment reader associated with the POS device, the payment data associated with the payment instrument used to satisfy the cost of the transaction;
 associate the resource locator with the payment data and the transaction data; and
 send, to the one or more servers, the first authorization request including the payment data, the transaction data, and the resource locator.

         15 . A method comprising:
 receiving, from a merchant application associated with a point-of-sale (POS) device of a merchant, transaction data associated with a transaction; generating a resource locator associated with the transaction data; storing the transaction data in a storage location associated with the resource locator; receiving an access request for information associated with the transaction, the access request being associated with the resource locator; accessing the transaction data from the storage location based at least in part on the access request being associated with the resource locator; and generating an itemized digital receipt based at least in part on the transaction data.

         16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising sending an authorization request to a payment service provider associated with a payment instrument used to satisfy a cost of the transaction, the authorization request including the resource locator.

         17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein:
 the payment service provider is a card network; and the access request is received from the card network.

         18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the resource locator is embedded as metadata in the authorization request.

         19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein generating the itemized digital receipt comprises generating a computer-readable specification that includes one or more of:
 merchant data associated with the merchant; location data associated with the transaction; the cost of the transaction; or transaction data associated with one or more items of the transaction, wherein the transaction data includes at least one of a name of an item of the one or more items, a modification associated with the item, a price of the item, or a picture of the item.

         20 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising sending the itemized digital receipt to a customer device operated by a customer to enable the customer to perform at least one interaction with the itemized digital receipt via a user interface associated with the customer device, wherein the at least one interaction comprises providing feedback, providing loyalty information, adding a gratuity, or disputing a charge.
