Abstract
A mold package for forming a cast device such as an engine block is described. The mold package includes a profiled chill and a mold core assembly that is disposed on the profiled chill. The mold core assembly defines a plurality of bulkheads of the engine block. The profiled chill includes a first chill portion having a second chill portion and a plurality of third chill portions arranged thereon, wherein the second chill portion is a semicylindrical element. The third chill portions are arranged to be adjacent to the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block.

exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A mold package for casting an engine block, comprising:
a profiled chill, and a mold core assembly disposed on the profiled chill; wherein the mold core assembly defines a plurality of bulkheads of the engine block; wherein the profiled chill includes a first chill portion having a second chill portion and a plurality of third chill portions arranged thereon; wherein the second chill portion is a semicylindrical element; wherein each of the plurality of third chill portions has a quasi-triangular shape including a flattened tip; and wherein the plurality of third chill portions are arranged to be adjacent to the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block with the flattened tip being proximal to a surrounding region of a cam bore opening of the engine block.
2 . The mold package of claim 1 , wherein the first chill portion is arranged as a rectangular prism, and wherein the semicylindrical element of the second chill portion is arranged on a surface of the first chill portion.
3 . The mold package of claim 1 , wherein the second chill portion arranged as the semicylindrical element is adjacent to saddle regions of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block.
4 . The mold package of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block includes a front bulkhead, a rear bulkhead, and a plurality of intermediate bulkheads; and
wherein the plurality of third chill portions arranged to be adjacent to the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block includes one of the third chill portions being arranged to be adjacent to an inner side portion of the front bulkhead, one of the third chill portions being arranged to be adjacent to an inner side portion of the rear bulkhead, and paired sets of the third chill portions being arranged to be adjacent to first and second side portions of each of the plurality of intermediate bulkheads.
5 . The mold package of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block includes an end portion; and
wherein the first chill portion is adjacent to the end portions of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block.
6 . The mold package of claim 1 :
wherein the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block includes a front bulkhead, a rear bulkhead, and a plurality of intermediate bulkheads; wherein each of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block includes a saddle portion, an end portion, and side portions; and wherein the first chill portion is arranged as a rectangular prism, wherein the semicylindrical element of the second chill portion is arranged on a surface of the first chill portion, and wherein the plurality of third chill portions are arranged on the semicylindrical element of the second chill portion.
7 . The mold package of claim 6 , wherein the semicylindrical element of the second chill portion is arranged adjacent to the saddle portion of each of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block.
8 . The mold package of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of third chill portions are arranged adjacent to the sides of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block.
9 . The mold package of claim 8 , further comprising one of the third chill portions being disposed adjacent to an inner side portion of the front bulkhead, one of the third chill portions being disposed adjacent to an inner side portion of the rear bulkhead, and paired sets of the third chill portions being disposed adjacent to first and second side portions of each of the plurality of intermediate bulkheads.
10 . The mold package of claim 6 , wherein the first chill portion is disposed adjacent to the end portion of each of the plurality of bulkheads of the engine block.
11 . The mold package of claim 1 , further comprising the profiled chill being disposed on a chill plate.
12 . The mold package of claim 1 , comprising the profiled chill being fabricated from a thermally conductive material.
13 . The mold package of claim 12 , wherein the thermally conductive material comprises one of a copper alloy, an aluminum alloy, a steel alloy, or an iron alloy.
14 . The mold package of claim 1 , comprising the first, second and third chill portions being fabricated from a solid material.
15 . The mold package of claim 1 , wherein the first, second and third chill portions include an internal fluidic passage accommodating a coolant.
16 . A profiled chill for a mold package that is configured for casting a device having an interior bulkhead portion, the profiled chill comprising:
a first chill portion having a second chill portion and a plurality of third chill portions arranged thereon; wherein the first chill portion is a rectangular prism including a first surface; wherein the second chill portion is a semicylindrical element that is arranged on the first surface of the first chill portion; wherein the plurality of third chill portions are arranged on the first chill portion and extend from the semicylindrical element of the second chill portion; wherein each of the plurality of third chill portions has a quasi-triangular shape including a flattened tip; and wherein the plurality of third chill portions are arranged to be adjacent to the interior bulkhead portion of the device with the flattened tip being proximal to a surrounding region of a cam bore opening of the engine block.
17 . The profiled chill of claim 16 , further comprising the profiled chill being disposed on a chill plate.
18 . The profiled chill of claim 16 , wherein the profiled chill is fabricated from a thermally conductive material including one of a copper alloy, an aluminum alloy, a steel alloy, or an iron alloy.
19 . The profiled chill of claim 16 , wherein the first, second and third chill portions are fabricated from a solid material.
