Abstract

Surgical tools for removal of tissue, namely instruments, devices and methods for surgical tissue cutting with a cylindrical cutting burr bit extending from an elongated hollow member and connected to a shaft for actuating rotation motion of said burr bit to cut/remove tissue from a target location, while mitigating the harm of damaging surrounding tissue.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method for removing excess bone tissue of a subject in need thereof, the method comprising:
creating an incision through the subject's skin when the subject is in an anterior position; introducing, through the incision, a surgical device comprising an elongated hollow member, a non-hollow rotary shaft, a burr bit, and a burr shield extending from a distal open end of the hollow member to partially cover the burr bit, wherein the shaft comprises a driving end configured to be connected to a rotary motion actuator, and a target end mechanically connected to the burr bit, positioning the burr bit against target bone tissue, operating the device to cut the tissue.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the introducing comprises inserting a distal end of the elongated hollow member in between two adjacent vertebrae.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the positioning comprises placing the distal end at the of the elongated hollow member underneath the vertebrae.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein operating the device comprises lateral cutting of bone tissue.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein operating the device abrasive grinding/cutting of bone tissue by contacting the burr bit with the bone tissue at areas of the burr bit not covered by the shield.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the burr bit is configured for forward and lateral cutting of bone tissue.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the burr bit protrudes distally from the distal end of the hollow member.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the burr bit comprises circumferential cutting/abrasive characteristics, and a close-ended distal end.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising separating between bone tissue intended for cutting and surrounding soft tissue utilizing the shield.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the soft tissue is a ligament.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shaft comprises bendable coiled and/or stranded wires.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow elongated member comprises a distal bend.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein a distance between the distal bend and the burr bit is less than 10 mm.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein a bending angle of the distal bend is up to 90 degrees.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the burr bit comprises a cutting edge.

16 . The method of claim 1 , whereon the excess bone removal comprises removal of osteophytes in spinal stenosis, removal of osteophytes in cervical spinal stenosis, or spinal decompression.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method does not require removal of vertebrae.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shield is circular or semi-circular or dome shaped.
