Compositions and methods for treating an infection

Abstract

A compounded composition may include one or more active agents including betamethasone and one or more anti-infective agents such as an anti-bacterial agent, anti-fungal agent, or other anti-active agent. The composition may be formulated by mixing dry powder including the active agents with a diluent. In one example, the diluent is a hydrocortisone and acetic acid solution or a sodium chloride solution. The combined preparation may be administered to the ear or skin to treat or prevent an infection.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A compounded composition, the composition comprising: a solution comprising mupirocin, betamethasone sodium phosphate, clotrimazole, xylitol, and at least one of (a) hydrocortisone and acetic acid or (b) sodium chloride. 
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein mupirocin and betamethasone sodium phosphate are present in a ratio from about a 1:0.01 to about 1:0.2 by weight. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 2 , wherein mupirocin and betamethasone sodium phosphate are present in a ratio of about 1:0.05 by weight. 
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein mupirocin and clotrimazole are present in a ratio from about 1:0.1 to about 1:0.3 by weight. 
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 4 , wherein mupirocin and clotrimazole are present in a ratio of about 1:0.15 by weight 
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein betamethasone sodium phosphate and clotrimazole are present in a ratio from about 1:1 to about 1:5 by weight. 
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 6 , wherein betamethasone sodium phosphate and clotrimazole are present in a ratio of about 1:3 by weight. 
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 1 , comprising about 20 mg mupirocin, about 25 mg betamethasone sodium phosphate, and about 3 mg clotrimazole. 
     
     
         9 . A method of making a compounded composition, the method comprising mixing betamethasone sodium phosphate, clotrimazole, and a diluent, wherein the diluent comprises a hydrocortisone/acetic acid otic solution. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the clotrimazole and betamethasone sodium phosphate are mixed in a ratio from about 1:0.1 to about 1:0.5. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the mixing comprises adding dry powder contents of one or more capsules to the diluent, wherein a gram of the dry powder contents of the one more capsules comprises about 0.0037 g clotrimazole, about 0.0012 g betamethasone sodium phosphate, about 0.08839 g of an excipient base powder, and about 0.9049 g of xylitol.
