Double blind wine tasting
Abstract
A system for conducting a beverage tasting event includes a plurality of beverage containers, a plurality of distinct identifiers, a plurality of distinct covers, and a set of instruction materials. The set of instruction materials instructs a first participant to privately assign a correspondence between each distinct beverage and a distinct identifier, and to privately transfer distinct beverages into beverage containers with the distinct identifiers visibly displayed in accordance with each assigned correspondence. The set of instruction materials further instructs a second participant to privately assign a correspondence between each distinct identifier and one of a plurality of distinct covers, and to privately mask, in accordance with each assigned correspondence, the distinct identifiers visibly displayed on the beverage containers, with the distinct covers, such that the distinct covers are visibly displayed on the beverage containers and the distinct identifiers are no longer visible on the beverage containers.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A system for conducting a beverage tasting event, comprising:
a plurality of beverage containers; a plurality of distinct identifiers; a plurality of distinct covers; and a set of instruction materials: instructing a first participant of a plurality of participants to, during a first phase of an initial setup of the beverage tasting event: (i) privately assign, for each of a plurality of distinct beverages, a correspondence between the distinct beverage and a respective one of the plurality of distinct identifiers; and (ii) privately transfer, in accordance with the assigning of each correspondence in (i), the plurality of distinct beverages into the plurality of beverage containers with the distinct identifiers visibly displayed on the beverage containers; and instructing a second participant of the plurality of participants to, during a second phase of the initial setup of the beverage tasting event:
(iii) privately assign, for each visibly displayed distinct identifier, a correspondence between the distinct identifier and a respective one of the plurality of distinct covers; and
(iv) privately mask, in accordance with the assigning of each correspondence in (iii), the distinct identifiers visibly displayed on the beverage containers, with the distinct covers, such that the distinct covers are visibly displayed on the beverage containers and the distinct identifiers are no longer visible on the beverage containers.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein privately assigning in (i) includes recording a private record of each privately assigned correspondence in (i).
3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein each private record includes at least one of a written notation or a preprinted sticker.
4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein privately assigning in (iii) includes recording a private record of each privately assigned correspondence in (iii).
5 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the set of instruction materials further instructs one of the plurality of participants, other than the first participant, to privately rearrange the plurality of beverage containers after the first participant records each privately assigned correspondence in (i) and privately transfers the plurality of distinct beverages into the plurality of beverage containers in (ii).
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of beverage containers are identically shaped.
7 . The system of claim 6 , further comprising:
a plurality of beverage bottles from which the plurality of distinct beverages are privately transferred in (ii), wherein each of the plurality of beverage bottles has a visibly displayed label indicating a beverage identity corresponding to the distinct beverage in the beverage bottle.
8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein at least two of the plurality of beverage bottles have different sizes or shapes relative to one another.
9 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of beverage containers are a plurality of carafes.
10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of distinct identifiers are attachable to and detachable from the plurality of beverage containers.
11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the set of instruction materials further instructs the first participant to privately attach the plurality of distinct identifiers to the plurality of beverage containers based on each private assignment in (i) and each private transfer in (ii).
12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the set of instruction materials further instructs one or more of the plurality of participants to attach the plurality of distinct identifiers to the plurality of beverage containers, and further instructs the first participant to conduct the private transfer in (ii) in accordance with the private assigning of each correspondence in (i) and the attached plurality of distinct identifiers.
13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the correspondence assigned in (i) for each of the plurality of distinct beverages includes one of a plurality of distinct beverage identities.
14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein each beverage identity is a particular name, a particular region, a particular producer, a particular vineyard, or a particular vintage.
15 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the set of instruction materials further instructs the plurality of participants to record guesses for each distinct beverage in each beverage container, wherein each guess associates a particular one of the plurality of distinct beverage identities with a particular one of the plurality of distinct covers visibly displayed on the beverage containers.
16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the set of instruction materials further instructs:
announcing a first beverage identity of the plurality of distinct beverage identities; identifying, by the privately assigned correspondences of the first participant, the distinct identifier corresponding to the announced first beverage identity; and revealing, based on the privately assigned correspondences of the second participant and the distinct identifier identified by the privately assigned correspondences of the first participant, which of the distinct covers corresponds to the announced first beverage identity.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein a particular one of the beverage containers, containing the distinct beverage having the announced first beverage identity, is identifiable, without unmasking any of the plurality of distinct identifiers, by the distinct cover corresponding to the announced first beverage identity, visibly displayed on the particular one beverage container.
18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the distinct beverage identity, of a particular one of the distinct beverages in a particular one of the plurality of beverage containers, is identifiable based on the privately assigned correspondences of the first participant and the privately assigned correspondences of the second participant, without unmasking any of the plurality of distinct identifiers.
19 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the set of instruction materials further instructs the plurality of participants to record one or more evaluations for each distinct beverage in each beverage container, wherein each recording associates a particular one of the evaluations with a particular one of the plurality of distinct covers visibly displayed on the beverage containers.
20 . A system for conducting a beverage tasting event, comprising:
a plurality of beverage containers; a plurality of distinct identifiers; a plurality of distinct covers; and a non-transitory computer readable medium that stores a program, wherein the program causes a computer to: (i) privately assign, for each of a plurality of distinct beverages, a first correspondence between the distinct beverage and a respective one of the plurality of distinct identifiers, and, for each of the plurality of distinct identifiers, a second correspondence between the distinct identifier and a respective one of the plurality of distinct covers; (ii) instruct a first participant of the plurality of participants to, during a first phase of an initial setup of the beverage tasting event, privately transfer, in accordance with the assigning of each first correspondence, the plurality of distinct beverages into the plurality of beverage containers with the distinct identifiers visibly displayed on the beverage containers; and (iii) instruct a second participant of the plurality of participants to, during a second phase of the initial setup of the beverage tasting event, privately mask, in accordance with the assigning of each second correspondence, the distinct identifiers visibly displayed on the beverage containers, with the distinct covers, such that the distinct covers are visibly displayed on the beverage containers and the distinct identifiers are no longer visible on the beverage containers.
21 . The system according of claim 20 , wherein the program further causes a computer to:
instruct one of the plurality of participants, other than the first participant, to privately rearrange the plurality of beverage containers after the first participant privately transfers the plurality of distinct beverages into the plurality of beverage containers with the distinct identifiers visibly displayed on the beverage containers.
22 . The system according to claim 20 , wherein the program causes the computer to instruct the first and second participants by at least one of a video recording, an audio recording, or a textual instruction.
23 . The system according to claim 20 , wherein the plurality of beverage containers are a plurality of carafes.
24 . The system according to claim 20 , wherein the first correspondence privately assigned for each of the plurality of distinct beverages in (i) includes one of a plurality of distinct beverage identities.
25 . The system according to claim 24 , wherein each beverage identity is a particular name, a particular region, a particular producer, a particular vineyard, or a particular vintage.
