Abstract

Senders' password protected messages may be transmitted and access to those messages available after a password is received. Senders' required-reading messages may also or alternatively be transmitted and recipients' device interaction restricted until indication is received that they are read.

         2 . A system comprising one or more computers and one or more storage devices on which are stored instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
 receiving, by a sending device, first data indicating a message for presentation by a recipient device in a messaging channel for which default messages are provided to a respective device for each of a plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel;   receiving, by the sending device, second data that indicates that the message has a pinned message type and should be pinned to a location in the messaging channel;   receiving, by the sending device, third data representing one or more identifiers for one or more recipient accounts from the plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel;   providing, by the sending device and to one or more recipient devices that each correspond to an account from the one or more recipient accounts a) of the plurality of accounts and b) that does not include all accounts in the plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel, the message i) that includes pinned message data that indicates that the respective recipient device should present at least a portion of the message in the messaging channel at the location while the message is pinned irrespective of receipt of other messages for the messaging channel and ii) to cause the respective recipient device to present at least the portion of the message in the messaging channel at the location;   receiving, by a recipient device, a second message for presentation in the messaging channel;   determining, by the recipient device and using the pinned message data for the second message, that the second message has the pinned message data that indicates that the recipient device should present at least a portion of the second message in the messaging channel at the location while the second message is pinned irrespective of receipt of other messages for the messaging channel; and   in response to determining that the second message has the pinned message data:
 determining, by the recipient device and using data for the pinned message type, a location to present at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel; 
 presenting, by the recipient device and in a user interface, at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel at the location; and 
 enabling, via the user interface, unpinning of the second message upon receipt of user input. 
   
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein presenting at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel at the location comprises presenting at least the portion of the second message at a top location in the messaging channel, a bottom location in the messaging channel, or a location with respect to a fixed reference point in the messaging channel. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 2 , the operations comprising:
 receiving, by the sending device, user input indicating the location.   
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein:
 determining the location to present at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel comprises determining, by the recipient device and for the pinned message type, default data indicating a predefined location as the location at which to present at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel; and   presenting at least the portion of the second message comprises presenting at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel at the predefined location.   
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 2 , the operations comprising:
 determining, using data for the pinned message type, that one or more unpinning criteria for the second message are satisfied; and   in response to determining that the one or more unpinning criteria for the second message are satisfied, performing an action for the second message in the messaging channel.   
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein determining that the one or more unpinning criteria for the second message are satisfied comprises:
 receiving input indicating entry of a password to access the second message; and   determining that entry of the password satisfies the one or more unpinning criteria for the second message.   
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein determining that the one or more unpinning criteria for the second message are satisfied comprises verifying an identity of a user as an intended recipient of the second message. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein determining that the one or more unpinning criteria for the second message are satisfied comprises determining that a time period is satisfied. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein performing the action for the second message comprises presenting at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel at another location other than the location. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein performing the action for the second message comprises removing the second message from presentation in the messaging channel. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 2 , the operations comprising:
 after receiving the second message, receiving, by the recipient device, a third message for presentation in the messaging channel;   determining, by the recipient device, whether the third message has pinned message data; and   in response to determining that the third message does not have pinned message data, presenting, by the recipient device, at least a portion of the third message in the messaging channel (i) in a default message position for that type of message that does not have the pinned message data and (ii) without changing the presentation of the second message in the messaging channel at the location.   
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 12 , wherein presenting at least the portion of the third message in the messaging channel in the default message position for that type of message that does not have the pinned message data comprises presenting at least the portion of the third message in the messaging channel in chronological order without changing the presentation of the second message in the messaging channel at the location. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein determining that the second message has the pinned message data comprises determining that the second message has the pinned message data that was indicated on the sending device using a user interface menu. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 2 , the operations comprising:
 receiving, by the sending device, data that indicates a modified attribute that is a modification of a default attribute for the message, wherein   receiving the second message comprises receiving, by the recipient device, the second message that indicates the a second modified attribute that is a modification of another default attribute for the second message; and   presenting, by the recipient device, at least the portion of the second message comprises presenting, using the second modified attribute, at least the portion of the second message in the messaging channel at the location.   
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein:
 receiving the second message comprises receiving the second message that requires at least one specified interaction before presentation of at least some content of the second message in the messaging channel; and   presenting at least the portion of the second message comprises presenting, in the messaging channel, a representation of the second message that requires the at least one specified interaction before presentation of the at least some content of the second message.   
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 16 , wherein prior to detecting data representing the at least one specified interaction, presenting less than all of the second message. 
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 16 , wherein receiving the second message comprises receiving, by the recipient device and from the sending device, a first portion of the second message before detecting data representing the at least one specified interaction, the operations comprising:
 detecting the data representing the at least one specified interaction; and   in response to detecting the data representing the at least one specified interaction, receiving, by the recipient device and from the sending device, a second, different portion of the second message.   
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 16 , the operations comprising recording the data representing the at least one specified interaction that has occurred and one or more of: a user name for the recipient device, a date when the at least one specified interaction occurred, a time when the at least one specified interaction occurred, an identifier for the second message, or the at least one specified interaction. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein:
 the sending device and the recipient device are the same device;   the message and the second message are the same message; and   providing the message comprises providing, to only an account for the sending device, the message to cause the sending device to present at least the portion of the message in the messaging channel.   
     
     
         21 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein receiving the first data comprises receiving, by the sending device and through an interface for a second messaging channel, the first data indicating the message for presentation by a recipient device in the messaging channel. 
     
     
         22 . The system of  claim 21 , wherein the second messaging channel and the messaging channel are different channels. 
     
     
         23 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein receiving the first data comprises receiving, by the sending device operated by an automated entity, the first data indicating the message for presentation by a recipient device in the messaging channel. 
     
     
         24 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein:
 messages for the messaging channel are provided to corresponding devices (i) for three or more accounts from the plurality of accounts and (ii) that include the sending device and the recipient device; and   providing the message comprises providing, by the sending device and to two or more recipient devices (a) for respective accounts from the three or more accounts and (b) that does not include the sending device, the message that includes the pinned message data.   
     
     
         25 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein:
 messages for the messaging channel are provided to corresponding devices (i) for three or more accounts from the plurality of accounts and (ii) that include the sending device and the recipient device; and   providing the message comprises providing, by the sending device and to two or more recipient devices (a) for respective accounts from the three or more accounts, (b) that includes the sending device, and c) that does not include devices for all accounts in the plurality of accounts, the message to cause the respective recipient device, including the sending device, to present at least a portion of the message in the messaging channel at the location using the pinned message data.   
     
     
         26 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein:
 messages for the messaging channel are provided to corresponding devices (i) for two or more accounts from the plurality of accounts and (ii) that include a first recipient device and a second recipient device; and   providing the message comprises:
 providing, by the sending device and to the first recipient device, the message to cause the first recipient device to present first message data from the message in the messaging channel at the location; and 
 providing, by the sending device and to the second recipient device, the message to cause the second recipient device to present second, different message data from the message in the messaging channel at the location. 
   
     
     
         27 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein receiving the third data comprises receiving trigger data that indicates the one or more identifiers for the one or more recipient accounts i) from the plurality of accounts ii) for which the message will be provided to corresponding recipient devices.

The system of  claim 2 , wherein receiving the third data comprises receiving, through a user interface menu, the third data that indicates the one or more identifiers for the one or more recipient accounts i) from the plurality of accounts ii) for which the message will be provided to corresponding recipient devices. 
     
     
         29 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein receiving the third data comprises:
 receiving trigger data that indicates one or more second identifiers of accounts a) from the plurality of accounts b) for which the message will not be provided to corresponding recipient devices; and   determining, using the one or more second identifiers of accounts from the plurality of accounts, the one or more identifiers for the one or more recipient accounts i) from the plurality of accounts ii) for which the message will be provided to corresponding recipient devices.   
     
     
         30 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein receiving the third data comprises:
 receiving, through a user interface menu, the third data that indicates one or more second identifiers of accounts a) from the plurality of accounts b) for which the message will not be provided to corresponding recipient devices; and   determining, using the one or more second identifiers of accounts from the plurality of accounts, the one or more identifiers for the one or more recipient accounts i) from the plurality of accounts ii) for which the message will be provided to corresponding recipient devices.   
     
     
         31 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein providing the message comprises providing, by the sending device and only to the one or more recipient devices that each correspond to an account from the one or more recipient accounts a) of the plurality of accounts and b) that does not include all accounts in the plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel, the message. 
     
     
         32 . A method comprising:
 receiving, by a recipient device and from a sending device, a message i) for presentation in a messaging channel and ii) that has a pinned message type that includes pinned message data that indicates that the recipient device should present the message in a messaging channel at a location while the message is pinned irrespective of receipt of other messages for the messaging channel;   determining, by the recipient device and using data for the pinned message type, that the message has the pinned message data that indicates that the recipient device should present the message in the messaging channel at the location while the message is pinned irrespective of receipt of other messages for the messaging channel; and   in response to determining that the message has the pinned message data:
 determining, by the recipient device, a location to present the message in the messaging channel; 
 presenting, by the recipient device and in a user interface, the message in the messaging channel at the location; and 
 enabling, via the user interface, unpinning of the message upon receipt of user input. 
   
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 32 , comprising:
 determining, using data for the message, that one or more unpinning criteria for the message are satisfied; and   in response to determining that the one or more unpinning criteria for the message are satisfied, performing an action for the message in the messaging channel.   
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 33 , wherein determining that the one or more unpinning criteria for the message are satisfied comprises determining that a time period is satisfied. 
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 32 , comprising:
 after receiving the message, receiving a second message for presentation in the messaging channel;   determining whether the second message has pinned message data; and   in response to determining that the second message does not have pinned message data, presenting the second message in the messaging channel (i) in a default message position for that type of message that does not have pinned message data and (ii) without changing the presentation of the message in the messaging channel at the location.   
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 32 , wherein:
 receiving the message comprises receiving the message that requires at least one specified interaction before presentation of at least some content of the message in the messaging channel; and   presenting the message comprises presenting, in the messaging channel, a representation of the message that requires the at least one specified interaction before presentation of the at least some content of the message.   
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 36 , wherein receiving the message comprises receiving, by the recipient device and from the sending device, a first portion of the message before detecting data representing the at least one specified interaction, the method further comprising:
 detecting the data representing the at least one specified interaction; and   in response to detecting the data representing the at least one specified interaction, receiving, by the recipient device and from the sending device, a second, different portion of the message.   
     
     
         38 . A method comprising:
 receiving, by a sending device and through an interface for a first messaging channel, first data indicating a message for presentation by a recipient device in a second messaging channel for which default messages are provided to a respective device for each of a plurality of accounts that receive messages for the second messaging channel;   receiving, by the sending device, second data that indicates that the message has a pinned message type and should be pinned to a location in the second messaging channel; and   providing, by the sending device and to one or more recipient devices that each correspond to an account from the plurality of accounts that receive messages for the second messaging channel, the message i) that includes pinned message data that indicates that the respective recipient device should present the message in the second messaging channel at the location while the message is pinned irrespective of receipt of other messages for the second messaging channel and ii) to cause the respective recipient device to present the message in the second messaging channel at the location.   
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 38 , comprising:
 receiving input indicating one or more unpin criteria for the message that, when satisfied, cause the respective recipient device to unpin the message from presentation at the location in the messaging channel.   
     
     
         40 . The method of  claim 38 , comprising:
 receiving, by the sending device, user input indicating the location.   
     
     
         41 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein determining that the message has the pinned message data comprises determining that the message has the pinned message data that was indicated on the sending device using a user interface menu. 
     
     
         42 . The method of  claim 38 , comprising receiving third data indicating one or more identifiers for one or more recipient accounts from a plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel, wherein:
 default messages for the messaging channel are provided to a respective device for each of the plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel, and   providing the message comprises providing, to one or more recipient devices that each correspond to an account from one of the one or more recipient accounts a) of the plurality of accounts and b) that does not include all accounts in the plurality of accounts that receive messages for the messaging channel, the message that includes the pinned message data.
